M-U-F MEANING USE FORM Teach vocabulary and grammar with the M-U-F framework in this order.
MEANING • For the first step, teachers introduce a new language to children in MEANINGFUL CONTEXT to help the children understand the meaning of the language that they are learning. • Meaning can be created through situations that are related to children’s life.
WAYS TO CREATE MEANING • Set situations or dialogues that are fun for children using toys, puppets, or other media. • Using stories. • Playing dramas. • Using Total Physical Response (TPR) • Using pictures. • Using children’s experiences as learning materials.
USE • After children are exposed to English language through the situations, they also need opportunities to use English to communicate with others. • They can use the language to role play, conduct surveys, do information gaps, play guessing games, etc.
Sample of Activities Games Information gap Quiz Plays Giving and following instructions to do or making something. • Creating funny rhythms or songs. • • •
FORM • Children subconsciously notice form of language (grammar) and tend to use language naturally in accordance with their need. • Thus, teachers have the responsibility to attract children’s attention to language forms during English lesson, which means that the teachers are making the children aware of accurate language use both orally and written.
Some Strategies • Games—children raise their right hands if teacher says singular animals, and their left hands if teacher says plural animals. • Writing—completing sentences, arranging words into good sentences, or completing dialogues. • Activities that increase students’ awareness on grammar —teacher asks “What is similar about these sentences? ●He is talking ●She is listening ●They are eating at the restaurant
How to teach vocabulary • Meaning = what does it mean and not mean • Use = how do we use it in a sentence • Form = prefix, root, suffix • Teach vocabulary in context - related to the topic, with similar words, in sentences • Teach chunks of language (e. g. eat breakfast) • Repeat practice, recycle words frequently • Use pictures, visuals, realia, and mime. • Categorize with synonyms/antonyms/hyponyms/meronyms • Use comprehension check questions (CCQs)

Graphic Organizers Graphic organizers are for organizing information. They are great for vocabulary, listening and reading activities. The can also be used for generating ideas. Let’s do some graphic organizers…
These graphic organizers are from the Independent Reading Management Kit. This is a book full of book reports. Task: 1. Take a book report and complete it using your book (just pretend you have completed reading the book!) 2. If you finish quickly, take another report until they are all finished. 3. Share your book reports with another group. Discuss the style of graphic organizer and whether you would use this in your teaching. Note: I can share the book report files with you. I’ll send an email link.
