What is the LO-GIC Model? • LO-GIC stands for: Lectures Online Group-work In Class. • • • Physics 160/260, University Physics I & II, are gateway courses for physics, engineering, math, and chemistry majors. Approximately 500 students take these courses each academic year. Both of these courses are implemented and classtested in LOGIC.
Format of the Course • • Students watch pre-recorded videos online. Each chapter consists of 5 -9 different videos anywhere between 5 -25 minutes in length. During the class time, instructor will summarize the chapter, and students will get together and solve problems in groups of 3 -4. After students attempt solving an assigned problem, the instructor will go over the problem and solve the problem. There will be a discussion on what concepts were used in solving the problem and what other methods could be used.
Assessment • • • Online conceptual quiz at the end of each video lecture to test the conceptual knowledge of students gained from the videos In-class or online problem solving quiz to gauge their understanding on problem solving techniques Online homework through publisher’s homework management system • In-class Exams • In-class Final • Pre and post standardized surveys (Force Concept Inventory)
LOGIC+ • Will be implemented in HITEC (Highly Interactive, Technology Enhanced Collaborative) classrooms for Fall 2013. • Larger class size (72 students). • Will include mini-labs and demonstrations. • Will include internet-based simulations and activities. • • Will utilize undergraduate learning assistants to assist students with problem solving. Use lecture capturing software to capture the in-class activities and place them on Blackboard.
