expected and unexpected I am learning about what is “expected” and “unexpected” to do. When people do and say things that we expect, we feel comfortable. When people do and say things that we don’t expect (unexpected), we feel uncomfortable.
Expected We have positive thoughts about people who act in expected ways.
Expected It’s always expected to respond to people when they talk to you, to keep good personal space, and to use a calm voice with a polite or respectful tone in class.
Expected It’s always expected to say “hi, ” “bye, ” “thanks, ” and “you’re welcome. ” Thanks Hi Bye You’re welcome
Unexpected We have negative thoughts about people who act in unexpected ways.
Unexpected It’s always unexpected to yell, stare, tease people, or use a rude tone of voice.
Teachers and Students We have expectations for teachers. We have different expectations for students. Some things are expected for teachers but are unexpected for students. Some things are expected for students but are unexpected for teachers.
For example What if a student raised her hand asked a teacher if she could go to the bathroom? That makes sense. That would be expected for a student.
For example What if a teacher raised her hand asked a student if she could go to the bathroom? That would be pretty unexpected for a teacher!!! Students would feel confused! Students would have some strange or negative thoughts about the teacher!
Expected for teachers It’s expected for teachers (and school staff) to: ● Teach lessons ● Set timers and schedules ● Keep students safe ● Tell students when they’re doing well ● Help students ● Make point adjustments ● Listen to students when they are speaking respectfully
Expected for teachers It’s expected for teachers to give feedback. Almost. . . Sound out this part, then this part, and try again.
Expected for teachers It’s expected for teachers to: ● Help students get calm if they get upset or disrupt class ● Focus on all of their students or take turns focusing on one student at a time ● Give suggestions, reminders, warnings ● Give directions
Unexpected for teachers It’s unexpected for teachers (and school staff) to: ● Earn free time ● Ask for a fidget ● Take self-help breaks ● Not have a lesson planned ● Forget important dates
Unexpected for teachers It’s unexpected for teachers to tell other teachers what to do.
Expected for students It’s expected for students to: ● Focus on their own work ● Stay safe ● Try their best ● Follow directions ● Make mistakes sometimes and need help (it’s ok!) ● Give compliments ● Do what they chose for freetime if they earned it
Expected for students It’s expected for students to make suggestions or make requests in a kind, respectful tone of voice. Maybe we could leave the markers in the middle? Then we could both reach them.
Expected for students It’s expected for students to say something in a respectful tone or take space if someone is making them feel uncomfortable or upset. What you said hurt my feelings.
Unexpected for students It’s unexpected for students to: ● Tease others ● Give directions to other students ● Give point adjustments ● Give reminders or warnings ● Help students get calm if they get upset or disrupt class ● Touch teachers’ or students’ belongings
Unexpected for students It’s unexpected for students to tell other students what to do. Hey! She’s not a teacher! You need to have a calm body.
Expected or unexpected When I act in expected ways, people feel comfortable thoughts about me. When I act in unexpected ways, people feel uncomfortable negative thoughts about me. and have positive and have I am a student. Now I know what is expected and unexpected for a student. It’s different than what is expected and unexpected for a teacher. I can act in expected ways.
