Teacher slide Objectives To be able to recognise
Teacher slide Objectives: To be able to recognise the skill of analysis, when you are using it and work on improving it. You need: Student worksheet Computers (optional but highly recommended) Links to other resources: All the other competencies resources will be relevant for teaching alongside this one. We would encourage you to look at these in detail.
What competency is being used in these images?
Unifrog resources Competencies: Analysis
Analysis Definition: detailed examination of the elements or structure of something. Analysis is difficult to define, as it takes many forms (as shown in the previous images). This skill is looked upon favourably for access to Universities and Apprenticeships, as it is a transferrable skill that is required in numerous disciplines. This skill is also essential for learning in school.
Instructions You will now practice the skill of analysis. You will analyse advertisements and explore what ideas they are really trying to sell. Observe Find patterns Draw conclusions
Observe: example Looking at the image or text, write down words/phrases that you can see. This is the literal part of the process. Trees Car Outdoors Electric Environment Dark Hiker Jacket Foggy Early in the morning High altitude Cold Rain Guy is alone Winter Grass
Find patterns: example Now look for patterns in those observations. Foggy Trees Early in the Car morning Outdoors High altitude Electric Environment Cold Rain Dark Guy is alone Hiker Winter Jacket Grass Quiet Nature Weather Calm atmosphere
Draw conclusions: example Use what has literally been observed and move it to the abstract. What idea is the advert selling? Trees Car Outdoors Electric Environment Dark Hiker Jacket Quiet Foggy Early in the morning High altitude Cold Rain Guy is alone Winter Grass Nature Weather Calm atmosphere Literal ideas Conceptual ideas which need analysis The car is selling the feeling of solitude, freedom and escape.
Instructions Working in groups of 3 -4, repeat this process of analysis with the advertisements given to you. You will then feedback to the whole group what idea you believe the advert is really selling.
Discussion Which part of the activity was the most challenging? Why? How did this activities develop analysis skills? Why is analysis an attractive quality to employers and Universities? How have you demonstrated analysis skills in, or out, of school?
Your competencies Login to the Unifrog platform and record examples of when you have displayed analysis skills. You might find this structure helpful when writing about your experiences. ü Situation: Set the scene ü Task: What was the task? üAction: What did you do? ü Result: What was the outcome?
Your competencies For additional support, see the examples of how to define and write about different competencies. Consider examples from: school, extra curricular activities, volunteering and employment.
Your competencies Consider examples from: school, extra curricular activities, volunteering and employment. My Biology coursework was about measuring the presence of different types of seaweed in Corban Bay in South Wales. My results showed that different types of seaweed prefer different environments. In order to explain this, I had to analyse why a particular environment might suit the lifecycle and physical features of particular seaweed. I got so interested in the topic that I ended up interviewing a Ph. D student who specialises in the area, and I also dissected different types of seaweed to look closer at their physical features. I discovered that the key reason for the presence of different types of seaweed is the strength of the current in different areas of the bay - some types of seaweed have particularly strong 'feet', meaning they can thrive in areas with strong current.
