Teacher slide Objectives To be able to recognise
Teacher slide Objectives: To be able to recognise the skill of independence and understand how this can be improved. You need: Student worksheet (printed as large as practical) or get students to copy the headings onto a blank piece of paper themselves. Computers (optional but highly recommended) Links to other resources: All the other competencies resources will be relevant for teaching alongside this one. We would encourage you to look at these in detail.
Unifrog resources Competencies: Independence
Discussion The competencies section of the Unifrog platform allows you to list concrete examples of competencies, to support you in your future applications. A key competency employers and Universities favour is independence. Discuss: What is independence? Why is it so important? What other competencies/skills are needed for independence? How important do you believe this skill is? Why?
Instructions Connection Mind Map On the worksheet are some behaviours required for successful independent work. 1. Working in small groups, you should discuss how and why these behaviours are important for successful independent work. 2. Next, draw lines to show connections between the behaviours and write your explanation on the line (behaviours are likely to have more than one connection). 3. Consider adding some more behaviours required for independent working. See example on the next slide. Note: big sheets of paper are useful for this!

Choosing the right learning environment Problem solving Having confidence and belief in own ability Setting goals and objectives
Discussion In your opinion, which behaviour is most important for successful independent learning? Which independent learning behaviours are you confident in? Which of the independent learning behaviours would like you like to display more?
Your competencies Login to the Unifrog platform and record examples of when you have displayed independence. You might find this structure helpful when writing about your experiences. ü Situation: Set the scene ü Task: What was the task? üAction: What did you do? ü Result: What was the outcome?
Your competencies For additional support, see the examples of how to define and write about different competencies. Consider examples from: school, extra curricular activities, volunteering and employment.
