WHAT IS INFLUENZA? • It is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infects the nose, throat, and sometimes lungs • Can cause mild to severe illness, at times can lead to death • It is different from a cold, as influenza comes on suddenly 2
HOW DOES INFLUENZA SPREAD? • Spreads easily from person to person through coughing, sneezing, or having face-to-face contact • Virus spreads when a person touches tiny droplets from a cough or sneeze on another person/object and then touches their own eyes/mouth/nose before washing hands • Infected person can spread the influenza before feeling sick (Adults: ~1 day before - 5 days after symptoms start) 3
SYMPTOMS OF INFLUENZA • Fever* or feeling feverish/chills • Cough • Sore throat • Runny or stuffy nose • Muscle or body aches • Headaches • Fatigue (tiredness) • Some people may have vomiting and/or diarrhea, thought this is more common in children than adults 4
WHO CAN IT AFFECT? • EVERYONE is at risk! • Adults 65 years and older and those with other chronic health conditions are at higher risk for complications 5
HOW CAN I PROTECT MYSELF FROM INFLUENZA? • Get the flu vaccine • Avoid contact with people who are sick • Cover coughs and sneezes • Wash you hands often with soap and water • Avoid touching eyes/nose/mouth • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with viruses that contain flu 6
WHO SHOULD GET THE VACCINE? • EVERYONE, 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine every season 7
WHY IS GETTING THE VACCINE IMPORTANT? • While getting a flu vaccine will not protect against COVID-19, there are many important benefits, such as: • Flu vaccines reduce the risk of flu illness • Reduce hospitalizations and death • Getting a flu vaccine can also save healthcare resources for the care of patients with COVID-19 8

COVID-19 & INFLUENZA • They are both contagious respiratory illnesses, but caused by different viruses • COVID-19: caused by infection with a new coronavirus (called SARS-Co. V-2) • INFLUENZA: caused by infection with influenza viruses • Due to similarities in symptoms for both, it may be difficult to tell the difference based on symptoms alone, and TESTING may be needed to confirm a diagnosis 12
