The Tea Act -Government Bailout for East India Company (Failing/Suplus Tea) Allowed the company to import tea to colonies without paying any taxes, so they could sell it cheaper and wipe out competition from those selling smuggled Tea from other sources (illegal Dutch tea). -The thought was the cheap tea would kill the smuggled tea market which couldn’t compete with prices, even with the Townshend Act taxes. -But. . . The actual consequence of this was a different story.
