TAXONOMIC CLASSIFICATION ANIMAL WELFARE BREEDING SESSION 3 RECAP

TAXONOMIC CLASSIFICATION ANIMAL WELFARE & BREEDING: SESSION 3

RECAP 1. WHAT ARE THE MAJOR CAUSES OF MASS EXTINCTION? 2. WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE CURRENT, ONGOING MASS EXTINCTION?

TAXONOMIC CLASSIFICATION • What do you think this refers to? ‘A hierarchical system used for classifying organisms to the species level. ’

CARL LINNAEUS (1707 -1778) • Swedish naturalist, considered ‘the father of modern taxonomy’ • Developed the taxonomic classification system in the 18 th century • Linnaeus developed the ‘binomial’ (two terms) system, in which the scientific name of an organism consists of the genus name, followed by the species name. But why do we need to classify organisms?

WHY DO WE CLASSIFY ORGANISMS? • Scientists classify living things to make it easier to study and understand the behaviors, lives and evolutionary progression of millions of life forms.

CLASSIFICATION CATEGORIES • Kingdom • Phylum • Class • Order • Family • Genus • Species

TASK. GET CLASSIFYING • https: //a-z-animals. com/reference/animal-classification/ • Select a species of interest to you (the more obscure the better!) • Using the taxonomic classification system, work out which KPCOFGS your chosen species belongs to • Write this down in a hierarchical order

EXTENSION TASK We are going to create an ‘evolution’ board in your base room. Task. Create a poster or fact-sheet depicting one of the following; • Taxonomic classification of a chosen species • Extinction of a modern or ancient species • Darwin’s theory of natural selection

FOR NEXT WEEK… • Create an acrostic poem using ‘KPCOFGS’ to help you remember the order of taxonomic classification. • Please e-mail these to me before next Monday
