“Tatanka” Bison By: Marissa Vele
The Tatanka was essential to the Lakota who live on the Great Plains.
For thousands of years, Tatanka provided food, clothing, shelter, tools and much more for the Lakota.
At one time, there were thousands of Tatanka that roamed throughout America.
Today, Tatanka’s numbers are smaller and live on less places in the Great Plains.
Tatanka is America’s largest land animal.
They can grow to be as tall as 6. 5 feet and 12. 5 feet long.
In the wild they can live to be 20 years old.
Tatanka can weigh up to 2, 000 pounds.
Tatanka can run up to 40 miles per hour.
Tatanka uses it head to plow through snow to find food.
Tatanka can withstand extreme hot and cold temperatures.
Tatanka is our reminder to give to others.
I grunt and paw and snort, I might seem kind of scary. But I’m the mighty bison, And I’m just really hairy.
