Bell’s Palsy A syndrome that attack facial nerve (N. VII) facial muscle paralyzed unilateral n n General characteristic of Bell’s Palsy is difficult in moving facial muscle at affected side, such as: Can’t close the eye Taste loss
Epidemiology n n n 20 of 100. 000 per population AS: 40. 000 people each year Increase by age 4 -14% is hereditery Pregnant Woman = 3 x more susceptible than unpregnant 4 x more susceptible in diabetes mellitus people
Pathology v Research: Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) found in geniculate ganglion. v PCR Test (Polymerase-Chain Reaction Test) in endoneural facial nerve (N. VII) fluid found Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) type 1
Symptom • Unsymmetrical face • Eyelid can’t close completely • Taste loss • Facial unilateral paralyzed • Difficult to speak • Difficult to eat and drink • Facial swelling • Drooling often • Depression of the eyebrow • Depression of eyelid
Related symptoms & clinical signs : 1. Lesion of inflammation outside the foramen stylomastoideus
2. (including the chorda tympani)
3. Lesion of inflammation in canalis facialis (including musculus stapedius) 4. Lesion of inflammation in geniculate ganglion
5. Lesion of inflammation in meatus acusticus interna area 6. Lesion of inflammation in facial nerve (N. VII) wayout from pons
Taste n Sense that captures chemical stimulus Anatomy and Physiology of taste n Structure Taste buds or gustation organ is situated at the surface of tongue inside the papillae. Consists of the receptor cell (gustatory cell) Surrounded by epithel supporting-cell, The free end has the microvilli, known as taste hair that Continued through the opening inside the taste bud that are called the taste pore.
Capable of feeling the five main tastes: sweet, sour, bitter, salty & savory (umami)
TONGUE INNERVATION Sensoric: n Two third area of the anterior by facialis nerve (VII) n One third posterior that reach the brain stem by Glossopharyngeal nerve (IX)
