Value of Fishery • Tasmanian Wild Abalone Fishery Remains Largest in the World • 2013 landed catch of 2, 008. 3 tons • 1% uncaught • Beach Price value of $73. 6 million • Revenue Generated by Industry $100 million • Associated Economic activity a further $200 million • Wages income via harvesting and processing $30 million
Fishery Performance • Divers harvested abalone for 27, 507 hours in 2013 • Decrease of 624 hours from 2012 • Average CPUE for 2013 73. 01 Kg’s per hour • Decrease of 6. 01 Kg’s from 2012 @ 79. 02 Kg’s per hour • CPUE declined in Northern , Central West and West Zones 2013 -2014 • Tasmanian Government Collect $5. 42 million in royalty payments – down $0. 3 million from 2012
Market Position • Premium Market for large Abalone • Processed product declined in value • Stock holding in Australia • Dried abalone increasing in production • Steady Level of demand in our traditional Chinese market • World production of farmed abalone has grown to 103, 468 tons
Product Differentiating • Promote Wild Caught Abalone • Hold or grow our market share • Australian Wild Abalone (AWA) funding expires in June 2015 • The need to distinguish Australian Wild Abalone has never been more apparent • Consumers overwhelmed with product choice in a highly competitive market • High Value of AUD , Import Tariffs, Austerity policies.
Harvest and Post Harvest Sectors • The Harvest and post Harvest have been subjected to economic profile by IMC Link ( Dr Bruce Felmingham) • Report recommended reform in both sectors. • Reduce FLADS to enable sustainable profit and investment. • Reduce Processing Licenses • The Board has identified profitability of these sectors as of a major concern to on going viability of the Abalone Fishery.
