Task Force Meeting November 22, 2020 Background & Ground Rules Background • A group of coaches approached the general chair a couple of months ago asking about Georgia Swimming’s position on current social unrest in many of our communities across the United States. • We held an exploratory call with coaches, general chair, and members of USA Swimming to discuss opportunities and next steps. • Agreement that we would put together a task force to work through opportunities and make recommendations to the appropriate persons. • Some recommendations, if the Task Force would request a change to Georgia Swimming’s governing documents, would need to come to the Board for approval and ultimately to the Georgia Swimming House of Delegates for ratification. GA Swimming Governing Documents requiring Ho. D approval • Bylaws (USAS must also approve) • Policies & Procedures • Rules & Regulations Advance notice to Ho. D required
Task Force Meeting November 22, 2020 Ground Rules • Getting started – allow the larger group to select it’s members (3 to 6, see below) and those members to select their leader/spokesperson (at least 1 must be an athlete). • Welcome all interested to attend, listen & speak, but keep task force small. • Political – Task Force has to stay away from political statements, affiliations, alignment, positioning – anything that could jeopardize our 501(c)3 non-profit status. • Focus on Swimming – broad discussions across many topics are fair game, but the conversation should always come back to how can we help [Georgia] Swimming. • Focus on things Georgia Swimming is capable of doing – there are good ideas that Georgia Swimming is not empowered to do anything about. • Root cause analysis – leverage tools like this to name a known problem, drill down into the root causes, and brainstorm potential solutions. • Prioritization – while many problems exist and there is no limit to good ideas, the task force should focus on actionable recommendations. • Keep the Mission & Vision statements in mind as you develop recommendations. Task Force Size: Researchers have conducted numerous studies to determine the approximate team size at which the benefits are maximized and coordination and motivation loss are minimized. Across these studies, the exact answer varies depending on the exact task, but the modal answer is 3 -5 people. In a seminal book on the topic, Ivan Steiner arrives at about 56 people, with the answer varying slightly depending on the exact task. Forbes
