INTERTEXTUALITY Intertextuality is when a film makes references and connections to other films. The harry potter franchise follow a very specific recipe to being a successful franchise. Harry potter and star wars have a lot of similarities to each other. http: //www. bitrebels. com/geek/harry-potter-vs-star-wars-the-similarities-arestriking/ There are many theories online showing how harry potter takes queues from the star wars franchise. But I think something that a lot of directors do to show respect and honor to the star wars franchise is to have a character loose a hand just like Luke Skywalker in “star wars empire strikes”. Harry potter did this when Peter Pettigrew had to cut off his hand to bring Voldemort back to full strength in “harry potter and the goblet of fire” http: //harrypotter. wikia. com/wiki/Peter_Pettigrew's_silver_hand

PREFERRED READINGS A preferred reading is when the audience responds to the film in a dominant, negotiated or oppositional way. in the harry potter franchise this would mean that if after watching a harry potter movie you leave the cinema thinking that harry potter is the good guy and a hero you responded to the film in a dominant way. Although if you leave the cinema thinking that harry is not always good and makes questionable decisions sometime which make you hesitant to think he's a good guy; you responded to the film in a negotiated way. And finally if you leave the cinema thinking that harry is the bad guy and Voldemort is really the good guy in the story then you’ve responded to the film in a oppositional way.

PRE AND POST VIEWING EXPERIENCES This is what audiences might do before and after watching a film. Some fans of the franchise are existing fans of the books; fans of the books tend to read the books before watching the movie to remind themselves of the story. Although some fans of the franchise like to watch the movies first and then read the books due to the fact that the books usually have more detailed versions of the story which get cut and edited to be a movie script. Both allow the fans to feel more in tune with the story and enhance the viewing experience.

CONDITIONS OF RECEPTION This simply means the environment the viewing took place in. Harry potter although a global phenomenon seems to be a little better received in the UK; this could be due to many reasons but I believe the main reasoning behind this is quite simply just the fact that the movies are based in the UK and are filmed here.
