Partitioning in the M 2800 February 6, 2004
What is Partitioning? • Partitioning is a method of dividing the library’s physical resources into separate, independent entities • The process of creating “Virtual Libraries” that are assigned exclusive use of a consecutive block of cartridge slots & one or more tape drives • Partitions operate independently, sharing only the E/E port and the robot • Partitioning can mix LTO drive generations, and drive & library interfaces all at the same time M 2800 Presentation | 10 -2004 | PM | Tandberg Data Sales
Partitioning vs. SAN • Partitioning allows sharing of the library and its resources • SAN allows sharing of the library and its resources • Servers connected to partitions have access to the library, but only the drives and tape slots assigned to that partition • All servers on the SAN can have access to the same library and all of its contents, through the use of a SAN storage software agent • SCSI partitioning (1 -4) requires an additional Tandberg library SCSI interface card(s) to implement – Each SCSI partition requires its own SCSI interface card, 1: 1 ratio, 4 SCSI cards maximum • SAN requires a larger financial commitment to implement • SAN partitioning (1 -8) only requires a single Tandberg library FC interface card M 2800 Presentation | 10 -2004 | PM | Tandberg Data Sales – 1: 1 -8 ratio, 1 FC card maximum
Partition Implementation • Each partition requires a consecutive block of cartridge slots and at least one drive to use • The M 2800 library features options for supporting up to 4 SCSI partitions and 8 fibre channel partitions – This is not a simultaneous feature with 4 SCSI libraries & 8 FC libraries M 2800 Presentation | 10 -2004 | PM | Tandberg Data Sales
SCSI Partitioning Setup, 2 Partitions • Partition 1 (shown in blue) consists of SCSI interface card 1 and drives 7 & 8. • Partition 2 (shown in red) consists of SCSI card 2 and drives 1 through 6. • Even though partitioning is in effect, two drives per 160 MB/sec SCSI LVD bus is required. • 1 SCSI Library interface for each Partition, this example requires 2 SCSI Interface Cards M 2800 Presentation | 10 -2004 | PM | Tandberg Data Sales
Partitioning Example with E/E Port installed, 4 Partitions • 4 Partitions, 4 Virtual libraries – Lib 1: Slots 1 - 20 & Drives 1 & 2 – Lib 2: Slots 21 - 64 - Drives 3 - 5 – Lib 3: Slots 65 - 122 - Drives 6 & 7 – Lib 4: - Slot 123 - 143 - Drive 8 • The parts shared by all libraries are colored in red: – Calibration block – Entry/Exit Port (E/E Port) – Robot M 2800 Presentation | 10 -2004 | PM | Tandberg Data Sales
Fibre Partitioning Setup Point to point or Switched Fabric example: • With a fibre interface card installed in the library, cable the interface card directly to the Fibre HBA or switch • With fibre drives installed cable directly to the HBA(s) or switch • Specify the partitions through the library “partition” menu selecting different logical units (LUN’s) for each partition • A maximum of 8 logical fibre partitions are available using 8 drives and 1 fibre channel interface card M 2800 Presentation | 10 -2004 | PM | Tandberg Data Sales
M 2800 Partitioning FAQ Frequently asked questions regarding partitioning of the M 2800 library
Why would I need partitioning? • Need for backing up separate servers or workstations where network backups are not sufficient or possible • Need for separation of “House” data within the same library – Operations – Accounting – Engineering – IT – Human Resources • Need to use different backup applications • Need to backup SCSI servers and Fibre Channel SAN • Any other reason that would require the purchase of two separate libraries that would be used in close proximity to each other M 2800 Presentation | 10 -2004 | PM | Tandberg Data Sales
M 2800 Partitioning FAQ • Can I use the E/E port with all partitions? • The E/E port is a common part for all libraries, & virtual libraries will have access to it: • What happens if more than one library is trying to access the E/E port at the same time ? • If one partition is using the E/E port, other requests to use the E/E port will return a SCSI busy status; depending upon the specific backup application program the command may be re-tried • Can each partition have a different emulation mode? • Yes. Each partition is independent from another and can either run in X 80 or X 200 emulation mode, or native mode • Does the library have to be partitioned equally? • No, it is not necessary to partition the library equally. As long as the partitions consist of a consecutive block of cartridge slots and at least one drive or consecutive block of drives, the partition is valid. For example, one partition can consist of slots 1 -142 & drives 1 -7, while the other partition is slot 143 and drive 8 M 2800 Presentation | 10 -2004 | PM | Tandberg Data Sales
M 2800 Partitioning FAQ • What happens if multiple software applications send move requests to their partitions at roughly the same time? • The robot manages move requests in a FIFO (First in First out) mode. The First SCSI move request will be the first to complete • Simple commands such as moving tapes, loading drives, etc. are quickly completed and will not cause a software application to time-out, even if they are fourth in the queue: • However depending on the specific software, commands that take longer to complete such as scans and inventories can possibly cause a time-out in the software and should be spaced out accordingly: M 2800 Presentation | 10 -2004 | PM | Tandberg Data Sales
Partitioning and Cleaning • There are two ways of cleaning the LTO tape drives in the M 2800 library – Autoclean and Software Controlled cleaning: • If Autoclean is enabled on the library, a cleaning cartridge (installed in slot 143) will be used to clean all drives across all partitions automatically when the drives display “drive needs cleaning” status • If the backup application (Software Controlled) is to control the cleaning, a cleaning cartridge must be placed within the slots of each partition and defined in each software installation M 2800 Presentation | 10 -2004 | PM | Tandberg Data Sales
