What is Overfishing? • Overfishing is when fish are caught at a higher rate than they reproduce • Fish are a finite resource • It is more disastrous to the ocean environment than pollution • It occurs everywhere • It causes a lot of aquatic species to eventually die out.
• The growing aquaculture industry increases production to meet the growing fish demand • Aquaculture is the cultivating of aquatic animals and plants
Why is Aquaculture Important? • As the population of humans grow, so does the need for fish • Our nation currently imports over 60% of its seafood, resulting in a trade deficit of more than $7 billion annually • At the same time, many valuable fish species are disappearing from our oceans through over harvest, loss of habitat and pollution. • Aquaculture can reduce the dependence on wild fish, help save depleted stocks and address our growing demand for seafood • Recent technological advances are making this an increasingly safe, profitable and environmentally sustainable industry.
How To Stop Overfishing • There must be more areas where fishing is closed • Limit the amount of fish that can be caught • Make it so that the catch will be worth less upon harm unless evidence demonstrates otherwise • Patrol the waters better
