Systems Engineering Approach § A systematic approach for designing and managing complex systems, such as the CMS detector, to ensure that they perform as an integrated whole that meets its objectives. § Sub-detectors of CMS are complex systems in their own right, requiring a systems engineering approach § The US CMS HL-LHC Upgrade Project systems engineering approach takes into account that § It is part of a the international CMS Upgrade Project § The international CMS Upgrade Project must integrate into an existing operational experiment Director's Review -- System Engineering 2016 February 2 5
Systems Engineering in the CMS Context § Coherence of the overall CMS Upgrade Project is the responsibility of the CMS Upgrade Coordinator § Overall responsibility for integration of all parts of CMS resides with the CMS Technical Coordination Team, led by the Technical Coordinator at CERN => The CMS Technical Coordination is the lead systems engineering organization for CMS § US CMS systems engineering procedures must be compatible with those specified by CMS Technical Coordination. Director's Review -- System Engineering 2016 February 2 6
Requirements § Requirements flow down drive Conceptual Design § Science Objectives => Science Requirements => Detector Functional Specifications => Detailed Component Specifications § Developed and documented in the CMS Technical Proposal and Scope Document § Will be further detailed in Technical Design Reports to be written by the end of 2017 § Requirements and specifications will be documented and approved using the CERN EDMS Director's Review -- System Engineering 2016 February 2 7
Systems Engineering Management § Systems engineering is a project line-management responsibility § Issues internal to a US CMS subproject are the responsibility of the relevant subproject manager § Issues internal to a CMS sub-detector are the international CMS subdetector manager § US CMS L 2 manager works with the international manager to ensure compatibility of US parts with the whole system § US CMS Upgrade Project Electronics and Mechanical Engineers oversee the systems engineering process within the US Project § US Project Manager, Deputy Project Manager and Project Engineers are key contacts with CMS Upgrade and Technical Coordination Director's Review -- System Engineering 2016 February 2 8
Systems Engineering Requirements Director's Review -- System Engineering 2016 February 2 9
System-Level Designs § System-level design for the CMS Upgrades are developed by the CMS Collaboration and documented in the Technical Proposal § Upgrade designs are made in the context of a systemlevel design of CMS as it will exist when the upgrades have been implemented § System-level designs of sub-detectors are developed by the international teams for each system. The US Project is part of these teams. § Feasibility studies are performed to demonstrate that the conceptual designs meet the functional and science requirements. Director's Review -- System Engineering 2016 February 2 10
Reviews by CMS § CMS conducts system reviews jointly under the purview of the Upgrade and Technical Coordination, involving also Electronics and Physics Coordination. § Reviews ensure that individual systems meet the requirements, are technically sound, and will function correctly within the integrated CMS experiment. § The review sequence includes: § § § Conceptual Design Reviews Engineering Design Reviews Procurement Readiness Reviews Manufacturing Progress Reviews Installation Engineering Design Reviews Director's Review -- System Engineering 2016 February 2 11
US CMS Upgrade Project Responsibilities § US CMS HL-LHC Upgrade Project has responsibility for components and subsystems of sub-detector upgrades. § In some cases, e. g. FPIX, the US has major responsibility for a whole system. § System-level designs for US-provided components and subsystems are the responsibility of the US Project § They are developed to meet the requirements and specifications of the larger systems of which they are part. § Development is done with full cooperation with the overall CMS Upgrade Project. § They are subject to the same reviews discussed above, either individually or as part of a larger sub-detector review. Director's Review -- System Engineering 2016 February 2 12
Interface Management Director's Review -- System Engineering 2016 February 2 13
Interface Control § Interface Control Documents (ICD) define interfaces between work done by different groups. § Between different US groups within a single subproject § Between the US-provided equipment and the rest of a subdetector provided by the international collaboration § Between a complete sub-detector and the rest of CMS § ICDs cover all interface types § Mechanical / Thermal § Electrical / Electronics § Firmware / Software § ICDs are controlled documents in the CERN EDMS § Approval at the appropriate management level common to the two sides of the interface. Director's Review -- System Engineering 2016 February 2 14
Interface Control § Interfaces between a sub-detector and the rest of CMS are the responsibility of the CMS Technical Coordination, specifically the CMS Integration Coordinator § They are generally handled by the relevant CMS sub-detector manager. § The US Project will participate to the extent that they are responsible for equipment involved in the interface. § Definition and control of interfaces is an important component of the CMS technical reviews Director's Review -- System Engineering 2016 February 2 15
QA / QC Director's Review -- System Engineering 2016 February 2 16
QA / QC § QA / QC is guided by the Fermilab Quality Assurance Policy and Integrated Quality Assurance plan. § QA/QC systems specific to this Project will be developed and documented in a Quality Management Program Plan to be submitted before the NSF PDR and DOE CD-1 § The QA/QC elements will draw heavily on experience from similar projects, including the on-going Phase 1 US CMS Detector Upgrade Project § Prompt identification and documentation of deficiencies and understanding of root causes are key aspects § Project personnel are expected to identify non-conformities as well as potential areas for improvement Director's Review -- System Engineering 2016 February 2 17
QA / QC Plan Elements § Key elements of the QA/QC Plan include: § Systems to assure that only properly trained and qualified personnel are involved in design, manufacture and installation of detector components § System to qualify vendors as part of the bid process § Documentation of specifications, acceptance criteria and operating parameters of all items provided by collaborating institutions or commercial vendors § Sample testing of components and 100% testing of major subassemblies § Control of non-conforming items to ensure that they are not used Director's Review -- System Engineering 2016 February 2 18
QA / QC Plan Elements § Traveler System for work done in US CMS production facilities: § Documents key production steps and measurements taken to verify them § Identify, report, correct and trend non-conformance situations § Provides data that may be useful in installation and commissioning of components and subsystems § Ensures that problems are identified at the earliest possible opportunity to allow immediate remedial action to be taken. Director's Review -- System Engineering 2016 February 2 19
