System Wiring Communications & Power

RS-485 Cable • The standard wire used in RS-485 wiring is Belden 9842 – 24 AWG stranded (7 x 32) TC (tinned copper) conductors, polyethylene insulation, twisted pairs, overall Beldfoil® (100% coverage) + TC braid shield (90% coverage), 24 AWG stranded TC drain wire, PVC jacket

NEVER USE NETWORK CABLE FOR RS-485

• Sometimes even the flexibility of RS 485 isn’t enough: Problem: Star wiring patter is needed Solution: APM-10 star wiring adapter Problem: Runs of longer than 4000 ft are required Solution: Extenders are available (including Apollo ENI-110 s)

General Wiring Tips • Optical isolators are a good choice for RS 485 wiring that is connected to devices that are outdoor or could be subject to lighting strikes • Be careful with wiring termination. Use terminal blocks and tip connectors where necessary. Don’t over-strip wires, make sure no bare wire is exposed anywhere to avoid crossovers that can affect communication or lead to power touching comm lines.

What about…? • What kind of wire should be used for communication and reader connections? • What kind of Apollo power supply is suitable for an AIM-4 SL with 4 AP-Prox readers and 4 Schlage M 420 Mag locks? – Bonus question: How long will a 12 Ah battery power this setup?
