Syphilis Awareness Campaign: A Public Health Intervention in Sarasota County Neshia Mc. Clendon, DNP, FNPHC & Alexandra Texeira, DNP, CPNPHPC Purpose The purpose of this project is to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing an educational outreach campaign in Sarasota County to ultimately decrease syphilis rates in the community by promoting awareness, screening, and treatment. Background • Treponema pallidum. • Syphilis Stages: Primary, secondary, early and latent, and tertiary (neurosyphilis). • Tertiary Syphilis: Affects multiple organ systems H neurogenic, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and musculoskeletal complications. • Two Prong Approach: (1) Target a community with a diverse population (2) Target the community’s health care providers. • Minnesota Wheel Framework: Implements interventions on an individual, community, and systems. Hbased level • Phase One Interventions • 30 years of age and younger: (1) Condom Lollipops (2) Public Service Announcements • Greater than 30 years of age: (1) SCHD Mobile Unit (2) Door Hangers/Invitations • Health Care Providers: (1) Informative Podcast Series (2) Syphilis Infographic • Data Collection: SCHD epidemiologist records Greater than 30 years Less than 30 years • Simple and effective treatment when identified in early stages • 2016 Syphilis Outbreak in Sarasota County • Morbidity and mortality increases Discussions Syphilis Cases in Sarasota County by Race • Traditional, high. Oend public health models are not effectively reaching the residents of Sarasota County. • Syphilis Awareness Campaign Project: • Provides the grass roots to promote future research for syphilis eradication • Ability to save over 40 million dollars in the next five years • Rising health care costs • Increased risk of congenital syphilis in infants Phase one proposed to increase the promotion of syphilis testing, prevention, and treatment in the community. Z hence, the DNP students projected an initial incline of reported syphilis cases in Sarasota County after October 2017. The collected data reveals results that are in favor of the expected phase one outcomes.
