Synthesis of Sentences Part II
Combining Sentence into a Compound Sentence • Simple Sentence can be combined to form a Compound Sentence by using Co-ordinating Conjunctions. Such Conjunctions join together words, phrases or clauses of equal rank. Examples of Co-ordinating Conjunctions for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so, either. . or, neither. . . nor, not only. . . but also, no less than, however, still, nevertheless, therefore etc. • Exercise: Join two simple sentences into one Compound Sentence. • 1. He is not my friend. He is not my neighbour. • Ans. He is neither my friend nor my neighbour.
• 2. She is beautiful. She is intelligent. • Ans. She is not only beautiful but also intelligent. • 3. He is poor. He is contended. • Ans. He is poor still he is contended. • 4. He may be a mountaineer. He may be a traveller. • Ans. He may either be a mountaineer or a traveller. • 5. My grand parents are from Bengal. I can speak Bengali. • Ans. My grandparents are from Bengal, therefore I can speak Bengali. • 6. He is rich. He is kind. • Ans. He is both rich and kind.

Combining Simple Sentences into one Complex Sentence: • Simple Sentences can be combined into Complex Sentences by using Noun Clauses, Adjective Clauses, or Adverb Clauses. • By using a Noun Clause: A Noun Clause is a group of words which contains a Subject and a Predicate of its own and does the work of a Noun. • Example: 1. When will the train arrive? Tell me. • Ans. Tell me when the train will arrive. • ( ask the question what to the verb and the answer that you will get is a Noun Clause)
• 2. He may be right. I do not know. • Ans. I do not know, whether he is right. • (Ask the question what to the verb) • 3. Tagore was our greatest poet. It is generally agreed. • Ans. It is generally agreed that Tagore was our great poet. • 4. He hides his money. It is a secret. • Ans. Where he hides his money is a secret. • 5. The train arrived at the station. Bipin immediately got down from the train. • Ans. As soon as the train arrived at the station, Bipin got down from it. • ****************************
