About Jonathan SWift ★ Swift lived in both Ireland England throughout his life, giving him a unique perspective on the issues presented within his piece “A Modest Proposal. ” ★ Swift’s father passed away shortly before he was born, and his mother was unable to support him, giving him to his uncle Godwin Swift ★ Swift was enrolled in the most prestigious grade school in Ireland, and had to adjust to transitioning from an impoverished lifestyle to his new one

Sentence Length ★ Swift uses long, complex and run-on sentences ★ Uses many commas and semicolons to keep his sentences going ★ Long elaborate sentences, like his argument
Sentence Length ➢ Long sentences using many commas allows the author to list reasons and evidence, creating a more effective argument with background and wordy explanations ➢ Swift also has variety in sentence length, some medium and declarative,

Rhythm ❖ Swift does not have a defined rhythm or exact structure ❖ Begins many sentences with “I” and states his thoughts continuously throughout the passage ❖ Repeats his thoughts and reasons backing up his argument:
Structural Organization Swift chose to place the proposal near the end, putting a lot of background information and build up during the whole passage He started off with a story about a woman with her children trailing behind to try and elicit emotion and grab the
Voice of Reason Swift places the voice of reason towards the end of the “modest proposal” This strategic placement allows Swift to draw the audience’s attention throughout the entire piece
Voice of reason Throughout the text, Swift speaks of this horrible act of selling and consumption of human babies for the better good for Ireland. He places the voice of reason paragraph towards the end of the piece so he can appeal to pathos and build up disgust for the British landlords as much as he can before explaining the actual logical solution Placing the logical solution at the end makes it seem more simple and humane than selling and eating
