What is Symbolism? l Symbolism is a symbol in the text that has several layers of meaning. l The hidden meaning is different than the literal interpretation. l Uses an object or action that means something more than its literal meaning.
Infer l To come to a conclusion using evidence.
Foreshadow l To suggest or hint about something that has not happened yet.
Finding the Connection with the Symbol in the Novel l Does it foreshadow any events? l Does it reveal any information about the character? l How might this be significant to the story?
Primrose l It’s a flower that represents love, courage, and devotion. l How does this reflect the character Primrose? • She is courageous because she is a healer like her mother. • She is devoted to her mother and does not resent her for becoming depressed, unlike Katniss. • Prim loves very dearly– not just her family but animals and all living things too.
Prim’s Cat, Buttercup l Buttercups symbolize humility. l How does this relate to the text? • Describes Prim because she is a lover of all • • things. She nursed it back to health and was unable to let Katniss kill it. Sets up a distinct difference between Katniss and Prim.
Prim’s Goat, Lady l Goats are extremely curious and intelligent, and are known for escaping their pens. l Chinese Calendar Year: shy, introverted, creative, perfectionist. l How does this relate to the text? • • Prim is often shy, introverted, curious, intelligent, and creative. Katniss is curious, introverted, intelligent, and is always going outside the fence of District 12.
The Dandelion l “Our eyes met for only a second, then he turned his head away. I dropped my gaze embarrassed, and that’s when I saw it. The first dandelion of the year. A bell went off in my head. I thought of the house spent in the woods with my father and I knew how we were going to survive. To this day I can never shake the connection between this boy, Peeta Mellark, and the bread that gave me hope and the dandelion that reminded me that I was not doomed. ”
The Dandelion l The bread gave her hope and dandelion reminded her that she was not doomed. l What did she start doing after Peeta helped her? • She began to hunt to provide for her family.
The Mockingjay l Came as a result of a failed project by the Capitol to spy on the rebellious districts. Represents the Capitol’s failure. l The Mockingjay pin is the first representation of defiance. l The salute District 12 gives her the second symbol of defiance.
The Mockingjay Pin l Madge gives her the pin after the reaping. l What does the pin symbolize? • Individualism • The jabberjays broke free of the Capitol control • Foreshadowing? • Rebellion and Resistance • Do you think she is mocking the Captiol?
The Silent Salute l Is it okay to appear to be united in the districts? l What does this symbolize? • Defiance • Resistance, but not rebellion.
Food l Food is everywhere in the Capitol There is not enough of it in the districts l What does food symbolize? l • Wealth • Freedom
Panem l The word panem is Latin for “bread. ”

Tracker Jackers l They are Capitol muttations– like the Jabberjays. l What do the Tracker Jackers symbolize? • Capitol’s ruthlessness and willingness to do anything to stay in control over EVERY living being.
Rue’s Flowers l Wild flowers symbolizes thoughtfulness. l The receiver of wild flowers is someone very special who deserves the time and effort it takes to gather the flowers. l Symbolizes Katniss’ love and friendship with Rue. l Symbolizes an intense act of rebellion.
The Meadow Song- Daisy Flower l Daisy = purity and innocence l Song= tribute to Rue’s life; reminds the audience of her humanity and the Capitol’s inhumanity. l Hint: You can also add this to your theme handout.
