Sylvia’s Work Exploring the ocean 3
Tektite Project Exploring the deep seabed In 1970, Sylvia led a team of female scientists, to live underwater for 20 days studying fish and underwater habitats. The underwater laboratory allowed divers to sleep and work on the sea bed. They could swim out to explore and swim back without going to the surface. 4
World Record Dive Exploring the deep seabed Silvia dived to a depth of 381 m (3 times the height of the spire) strapped to a submarine. When she got to the sea bed, she unhooked and walked for 2 hrs on the ocean floor. She did this using a suit called “Jimmy”. Its similar to an astronauts suit. This is still a world record dive. 3 5
Deep Rover Exploring the deep seabed Sylvia designed a submarine called Deep Rover to study the deep seas. Deep Rover is a bubble shaped one person submarine that can reach depths of 1000 m (8 times the height of the Spire) 8 6
Mission Blue She set up Mission Blue to help save our oceans. 7
Mission Blue • Sylvia grew up on the shore of the Gulf of Mexico and always loved swimming in the sea. • 60 years ago she saw lots of fish every time she swam in the ocean. • In recent years she sees there are much fewer fish and less life. • This is caused by the damage people do to the environment. • Her project Mission blue is to help protect life in the ocean. 8
“ Think of the planet without an ocean. . You have a planet a lot like Mars. No ocean, no Life. No ocean, no us. 9
Mission Blue Sylvia sets up Marine Reserves all over the world. These are places where there is no fishing allowed. The Ocean recovers and repairs itself. Humans can study the wildlife. 10
