What is Computer Science? Computer science, or "CS", is a very large subject! It includes studying how to create new software, solve computing problems and developing different ways to use technology. Computer scientists create and invent new computers, robots, smart phones, apps, tablets, websites, and even cars! How does CS relate to STEM? CS is a blend of all the STEM categories because it involves science, technology, engineering and math. Computer Science is what people study in order to learn how to make or create technology. Is coding or programming the same as CS? CS is the big category of everything related to studying computing. Coding and programming are part of CS and they focus on telling a computer what to do. (COMPUTATIONAL THINKING!) Adapted from: Microsoft - What is CS and STEM?
WHY?
Computational Thinking… The ability to reason, think and problem solve are essential 21 st Century Skills that all learners need. Through the use of computational thinking, students in grades K-12 can successfully learn how to decompose problems, to aide in helping them reason through and think of solutions! This is essential work that will impact and help increase our students reading and math scores.

Resource: Scratch
Passcode = analysis
STAGE 3: Abstract Lemonade Stand Simulation
● Allow students to make mistakes ● Perseverance is a skill they will need to value and take notice of (nope you can’t give up - be their cheerleader) ● Teach them how to ask questions and observe what happens at each step Students and teachers will be APT to take short cuts and provide students with ‘hints. ’ As hard as it may be computers can’t provide us with hints. . . as programmers we have to collaborate and figure it out on our own!
What skills can be assessed with the Lemonade Stand simulation?

Content Area Projects in Scratch - Science Video of Bailey describing why she did this project and why creating video games is an important option for students to have. Her teachers did not use CS in elementary school, so she advocated for herself. https: //scratch. mit. edu/studios/3962768/ https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=Qy. Wf NPp. TNak&t=8 s
