SWWT Space Situational Awareness Briefing for SWWT topic
SWWT Space Situational Awareness Briefing for SWWT topic groups Mike Hapgood Chair, ESA Space Weather Working Team
SWWT BACKGROUND • Space Situation Awareness is a concept that reflects our increasing dependence on space systems – telecom, navigation, surveillance, etc. • Originates from US military – but civilian systems are equally vulnerable. • Europe needs to develop both policy and capacity. • ESA developing proposal for 2008 MC. This is seen to have three axes: – Survey, Tracking, – Imaging – Space weather (space environment monitoring)
SWWT Recent progress • SWWT /SB convened meeting in Paris, 3 October. • Attended by reps from many ESA Member States • Key outputs: – SWWT Chair to join ESA SSA User Group (Paris, 21 November) – AG/MH to identify Sp. W target areas for SSA and develop scenarios for Sp. W services (central node? competence centres? ) – Solicit input from SB members on national data policies and how these could impact a Space Weather element of a SSA proposal. – Explore interaction with LOFAR project (TEC data? )
SWWT Work in progress • Mapping Sp. W measurement requirements to SSA relevance – see following slides • Mapping SWENET services to SSA relevance • Scenarios for SSA services: SWENET, CSDS • Explore national data policies? • LOFAR – phase calibration for radio astronomy: – source of TEC data? – user of ionospheric models?
SWWT Sp. W measurements for SSA • Mapping of space weather measurement requirements to three proposed levels of SSA relevance. • The requirements derived from ESA space weather feasibility studies led by Alcatel and RAL in 2000/1 – space-based measurements - from recent RAL consolidation of both 2000/1 studies – ground-based measurements - from RAL study – Both have traceability to the common user requirements developed by RAL and Alcatel
