What is a BMP? “schedules of activities, prohibition of practices, maintenance procedures, and other management practices to prevent or reduce the pollution of the waters of the state. BMPs also include treatment requirements, operating procedures, and practices to control plant site runoff, spillage or leaks, sludge or waste disposal, or drainage from raw material storage. ” WAC 173 -226 -030 (3)
Two Categories of BMPs in SWMMWW ◦ Source Control ◦ Runoff Conveyance & Treatment
Source Control BMPs Prevent or minimize generation of pollutants. Sediment: reduce or stop erosion of soil p. H: control and contain sources of high p. H Chemicals: contain and cleanup
Protect soil from erosion in traffic areas: rocked construction areas
Protect soil from erosion: hydroseeding & track walking
Control sources of high p. H: concrete truck washout area
Control sources of chemicals: cover and contain, be prepared for cleanup
Runoff Conveyance and Treatment BMPs • Reduce or stop erosion of soil while conveying water. • Treat water to settle suspended sediments prior to discharge from the site.
Runoff Conveyance BMPs Interceptor Swale with Channel Lining and Check Dams Pipe Slope Drain
Stormwater Treatment BMPs Filter Fence Sediment Pond
All Sites Require Multiple BMPs Coir Blanket Compost Sock Silt Fence Seeding Jute Netting Coir Logs The right BMP, in the right place, at the right time!
Most Important BMP = CESCL • Inspections • BMP review • Sampling and reporting • SWPPP updates
