Saves Lives: How? 1. What is an internal arc? It is a high resistance arc fault within the switchgear enclosure due to insulation failure. 2. What are the effects of an internal arc fault? The fault current passing through the electric arc increases the air temperature inside the faulty compartment. The hot air expands and exerts very high pressure on the compartment walls and doors. If the switchgear is not designed and qualified for an internal arc, the high pressure can rupture the enclosure and endangers the life of persons working near the switchgear.
