Parts of a compound subject connected by and always take a plural verb regardless of whether the parts of the subject are singular or plural. John and I are going. The girls and john were going, too. The men and women have gone. When parts of a compound subject are connected by either- or , neither -nor , etc. , the verb is made to agree with the part of the subject nearest to it.
