• • • • • • • Subject/verb agreement A verb must agree with its subject in person and in number. Most of the errors in subject/berb agreement occur in the compound construction. Parts of a compound subject connected by and always take a plural verb regardless of whether the parts of the subject are singular or plural. John and I are going. The girls and john were going, too. The men and women have gone. When parts of a compound subject are connected by either- or , neither -nor , etc. , the verb is made to agree with the part of the subject nearest to it. Neither Sue nor Ellen is going. Either the girls or the boys are there. Either the class or Sam is right. Neither my friends nor I am going. Care must be taken not to make the verb agree with parts of intervening phrases or clauses. Wrong- The noise of the children are deafening. Right- The noise of the children is deafening. Wrong- His friends, as well as Tom, is here. Right- His friends, as well as Tom, are here. Exercises 16. 1 Either you or I am going. Neither he nor I am going. You or George is mistaken. You and George are mistaken. Either Tom or his friends were chosen. Either Tom or his friend was chosen. Neither Tom nor his friend was chosen. Which of these two bicycles is better? The condition on this book is bad. The condition of these books are bad.
