Charge to SWG formulated for D&D phase • Specific tasks of the ASWG include: • Participate in preparation of Science Requirements Document(s) - done • Advise on prioritization of science goals - done • Define a set of key observations and experiments to be performed with highest priority as soon as ATST becomes operational – TAC issue? • Advice on trade-offs between broad capabilities and key objectives when required by the design process. Where necessary use models and simulations to help define observational aims - mostly done, some ongoing • Advise on trade-offs between scientific capability, technical feasibility and cost that may become necessary - ongoing • Prepare a prioritized list of first light instruments - done • Provide‡ input as to how the ATST should be operated in order to achieve its scientific goals - ongoing

SWG during construction • Need strong and effective advocacy of science interests, community concerns

SWG during construction • Need strong and effective advocacy of science interests, community concerns and community interests at the top level of the ATST organization • Focus on scientific oversight of the implementation – – – Does it meet requirements? Priorities/trades Operations planning Procurement approaches – e. g. detectors, … … • Advocacy for science – Project and community – Evolution of science goals – …

SWG Structure • SWG advices and reports to Project Scientist. • SWG issues formal

SWG Structure • SWG advices and reports to Project Scientist. • SWG issues formal findings and recommendations to which the project will respond in a formal and timely manner. • Project Scientist appoints SWG Chair • Each Co-I and/or Instrument Development Institution appoints one executive member • The SWG chair appoints additional members • Terms of service: – Members: 2 years – Chair: discretion of PS – Co-I/Instrument Institutes: discretion of institutes

SWG Structure cont. • Core members defined as: – Chair – Executive members –

SWG Structure cont. • Core members defined as: – Chair – Executive members – Project Scientist (ex officio) • Meet quarterly or more frequently if needed • Full SWG meets at least once a year • Project Scientist or designee(s) reports to SWG on project status and issues

Charge to SWG • The SWG is responsible for scientific oversight and advice concerning all aspects of the project, including operations planning. • The SWG provides advocacy of science goals and objectives – ATST project – Wider community – Adaptation of science goals and priorities w/time • Provide scientific guidance on trade-off, priorities • Definition of first light observations
