Timetable It is important to note that the timetable is for time based in school. We also have to recognise the partnership between home and school. We would like to enhance this area and will be holding sessions throughout the year inviting you to join us for some school based tasks. From September 2015, we teach subjects based on the National Curriculum 2014, with elements of the creative curriculum linking topics to curriculum subjects.
Topic overview Autumn – Lighthouse Great Fire of London Guy Fawkes Polar Regions Spring – Amazing animals Healthy humans Florence Nightingale Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Summer – The Twits Katie Morag Year 2 Play
End of Key stage one assessments At the end of KS 1, children will be assessed in: • Reading • English grammar, punctuation and spelling - writing • Maths
KS 1 Assessments These are based on knowledge at the end of the Key stage hence Year 2 builds upon year 1 work. In the summer term 2019, final assessments will be made by the teacher and children at the end of Key Stage 1 will sit assessment papers in May 2019 to help evidence pupil level. Assessments have recently been overhauled in both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 to reflect the changes to the national curriculum, which are being phased in from September 2014.
Let’s look in greater detail at English and maths lessons and assessments in year 2
Literacy is a daily lesson, made up of three aspects: Reading Writing Speaking and listening Across these areas, the children will be working with a range of material, including stories, non-fiction and poetry. They will be looking at stories with familiar settings, traditional tales, and different stories by the same author.
KS 1 Reading The reading test for Year 2 pupils will involve two separate papers: Paper 1 consists of a selection of texts with questions interspersed Paper 2 comprises a reading booklet of a selection of passages. Children will write their answers in a separate booklet. Each paper is worth 50 per cent of the marks, and should take around 30 minutes, but children will not be strictly timed, as the tests are not intended to assess children’s ability to work at speed. Teachers will have the option to stop the test at any point that they feel is appropriate for a particular child.
Reading – we will endeavour to provide two reading books each week for your child from the school reading scheme A school library book will be your child’s opportunity to choose a book with guidance from our school librarian. We aim to change weekly. Remember to read with your child and try and factor in some family reading time as if children see you reading it will help inspire them to be readers and read for pleasure.
Reading record – this needs to be signed each time you hear your child read. Please record any other books you are enjoying with your child. Comprehension is a vital part of the Literacy curriculum. Pupils will take part in a guided reading lesson to enhance any skills required and will have a comprehension lesson each week. Author of the half term – selected author to enhance reading time at home and school Most children are becoming more confident readers by Year 2. They will probably still be working through the school reading scheme, and will be reading with the teacher and in small groups (guided reading). REMEMBER SCHOOL BOOK IS ONLY ONE READING EXPERIENCE
GPS Pupils will have a GPS focus each week You can help by looking for GPS in pupils writing and when reading. Pupils will be given spellings each week linked to the Year 2 curriculum. These spellings will be tested each week informally. We shall look at spelling patterns on a daily basis. We need to build upon the pupils ability not only to read a word but to spell the word showing understanding of the meaning and use in context. Pupils ideally should currently be familiar with the first 100 HFW. Pupils should be familiar with using a dictionary – picture dictionary onwards.

Focus for GPS this year
Writing As a school, we implement the principles of Pie Corbett during writing tasks. This means pupils complete a ‘cold write’ and then work on areas of improvement before completing a ‘hot write’. This is an up-levelled piece of work showing improvements on initial ‘cold write’. The writing is assessed by the teacher and marked according to the school marking policy. After each session pupils will be given verbal feedback to ‘up-level’ their work by a member of staff.
• KS 1 Writing assessment is based on writing produced in all areas of the curriculum – not just Literacy. • Based on the ethos “if a pupil can say it they can write it” which means all pupils have a starting point. • Pupils will complete a writing task each Friday and this will be linked to the topic e. g. this week is an introduction to themselves using ideas created over the summer. This may be a cold or hot write depending on lessons taught earlier in the week.
Writing - Teacher Assessment As indicated we engage pupils in a writing activity each week. Writing is marked and assessed and individual feedback is given. Pupils have targets to then implement in the next piece of written work. We assess writing in all areas of the curriculum. Pupils are continually assessed for the overall writing level and we look for skills and content.
Writing at the expected level The pupil can, after discussion with the teacher: • write simple, coherent narratives about personal experiences and those of others • write about real events, recording these simply and clearly • demarcate most sentences in their writing with capital letters and full stops, and use question marks correctly when required • use present and past tense mostly correctly and consistently • use co-ordination (e. g. or / and / but) and some subordination (e. g. when / if / that /because) to join clauses • segment spoken words into phonemes and represent these by graphemes, spelling many of these words correctly and making phonically-plausible attempts at others • spell many common exception words* • form capital letters and digits of the correct size, orientation and relationship to one another and to lower-case letters • use spacing between words that reflects the size of the letters.
KS 1 NUMERACY The new Key Stage 1 maths test will comprise two papers: Paper 1: arithmetic, worth 15 marks and taking around 15 minutes. Paper 2: mathematical fluency, problem-solving and reasoning, worth 35 marks and taking 35 minutes, with a break if necessary.
Numeracy Topic overview is linked to homework tasks which you may want to complete Work is levelled appropriate to the pupils needs during Numeracy sessions Big Maths - sent home each week to celebrate success Time tables knowledge 2 5 10 Regular assessment and working in small groups dependent on ability
When will the KS 1 SATs take place? KS 1 SATs are due to be administered in May 2019. How will the tests be marked? Although the tests are set externally, they will be marked by teachers within the school with careful moderation. Results will be communicated to parents via the school report.
Other subjects Other national curriculum subjects, including English writing, speaking and listening, science and computing, will be assessed by your child's teacher based on their work throughout the year.

Another headline for another slide • Allow lots of space around the wording • Don’t go too close to the edges, it allows the presentation to have room to breathe • Allow spacing between bullet points and make sure your paragraphs are kept short… and to the point! • If you need more slides to show the information, use as many as you needs SWANLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL | INFORMATION FOR PARENTS
