Safety Outreach Day
PROMOTING SAFETY IN SC Focusing on Safety in SC
By the numbers… o 2018 – 59 fatalities o As of July 1 st – 30 fatalities o Still listed in the top 5 most dangerous industries according to OSHA. o During this past summer 2 fatal incidents with collection vehicles near the landfill in Horry Co. with residents, and a solid waste collector on the back of a rear loader in Aiken Co. lost his leg.
SC Ambassadors Former Ambassador • John Tilton (WM) • Responsible for starting our outreach program with our landfills and transfer stations. New Ambassadors • Tonya Lott – Charleston County • Ed Marr – City of Myrtle Beach
Safety Programs o The SCSWANA Chapter has sponsored on-site safety programs for transfer stations and landfills. o Flyers/posters are provided for distribution for all those using those facilities. o Pictures, lunches and other awareness efforts were done at a few of the facilities as well. o All participants were able to register and be eligible for a $500 prize.
Going Forward o Tonya, myself and the rest of the Board will be working towards enhancing our safety programming in the coming year o First we will be looking for things that we can promote that already exist through National SWANA. There is a great deal of information, programs and products available that I would encourage everyone to look at. o The easiest one to promote is the “Safety Pledge”
