SVA Graphs 2020 Speed Distance an object travels
SVA Graphs 2020
Speed • Distance an object travels in a certain unit of time • The rate at which something or someone is able to move Speed is just a number. You do not know the direction it is going
Units and Triangle • Common units for speed: m/s, mph km/h
Speed Problem A person drives a car for 5 hours and goes 150 miles, how fast was he traveling?
Velocity • Speed in a certain direction • If you change either the speed OR the direction, the velocity will change Carl is driving 65 mph west
Velocity Problem A person drove a car from Houston to Dallas (going North). It took 5 hours to go the 300 miles. What was his velocity? Direction from Houston to Dallas
Acceleration • The rate at which velocity changes
Accelerating vs. Decelerating • Positive value • Speed is increasing • Move faster • Negative value • Speed is decreasing • Moving object will slow down or stop completely
Speed Velocity Acceleratio n

Constant Speed SPEED Graphs 1. 2. Time is changing but distance is NOT Never changes speed Acceleration The object is getting faster No Motion/Speed 3. 4. Turning around Object turns around and heads back to starting point

ACCELERATION Graphs 1. 3. 2. 4.
ACCELERATION Graphs Acceleration 1. The object is getting faster The faster the speed, the steeper the slope Deceleration 3. The object is getting slower 2. Constant Speed Never changes speed 4. No motion/speed Time changes but speed remains at ZERO
