Long answer (level of response) questions General guidance • Write some keywords / phrases that relate to the question, before you write your answer. As you write your answer, try to use these keywords / phrases appropriately. To get 5 or 6 marks, you need to include the scientific language you have learnt and use it correctly. • Draw a diagram if you can to help to illustrate the main point(s). Add simple labels that might save you writing several whole sentences. This can help you get started. • Often these questions ask for or invite a conclusion. You might describe pros and cons and then make a conclusion. Important for high marks. A good answer will include several related points. • To get the highest marks (5 or 6), check your spelling, punctuation and grammar. It may help to write in short sentences. Remember full stops and capital letters, and spell the key terms correctly.

Question 1 Although we are trying to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, the percentage of UK electricity produced in nuclear power stations has decreased in recent years. Many people do not want new nuclear power stations to be built. Suggest why people do not want more nuclear power stations. Explain why they should be more willing to consider nuclear power.

Question 2 Britain’s electricity is produced mainly by burning coal or gas, with a small proportion of nuclear power. Suggest how and why this is likely to change over the next twenty years.

Question 3 Britain is looking to achieve a sustainable and secure supply of energy for the future. Describe what this means and suggest how we might achieve it.

Question 4 The average amount of energy per year used by a person living in India is less than 10% of the average used by someone living in the USA. What is so different about living in these two places? Suggest what will happen and what should happen as India becomes a wealthier country.

Question 5 We are trying to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels in the UK. One problem is that local people object to renewable energy generation in their own area. Describe one source of renewable energy people object to having near them. Describe their concerns and explain why they should reconsider.
