A network of people & organisations bound together by factors such as… Ø Shared identity, culture and/or whakapapa – eg. hapū/iwi or ethnic group Ø Common geography, locality, place Ø Administrative or political arrangements Ø Similar interest or kaupapa eg. voluntary organisation, Māori community group, online “virtual community, ” work (Based on OECD, 1998; Royal Commission on Social Policy, 1988)
What is a Sustainable Community? Ø Maintains carrying capacities (natural resources, cultural values, human and social capital, economy and built capital) Ø Considers future generations Ø Retains diversity (creativity, skills), equity Ø Balanced development - recognises interconnections of everything Ø Considers wider interdependencies Ø Community-owned, participatory
