Sustainability/Mission & Communication to Parishioners 1
Sustainability/Mission • • • To keep in existence; to grow Maintain; to endure; to withstand To provide with nourishment; encourage To support the spirit, vitality or resolution To corroborate; confirm Firm foundation 2
How do we achieve Sustainability • • Have a vision of the future of the PCA Teamwork; Communication Hard work on all levels Maintaining a positive attitude Invest in what works; Stop funding what does not Good planning Excellent execution Willingness to take risks 3
Parish Planning Process • Pastoral and Finance Committees of each parish develop a 5 year plan for the PCA – Hold Town Hall meetings with the community – Where can we be in 2022 • Start with the current situation – Reality of where the PCA is today – Address risks and opportunities • Needs to be specific and actionable – With time lines and deadlines – Good detailed budget as Year 1 of the plan 4
So how so we get there? • Rule 1 - Each Parish and PCA must be self funding – Every mission needs to achieve a positive margin • Invest : We are going to need to invest in programs • Raise Cash: to pay for investments Cash Flow is Key ! 5
INVEST • Evangelization programs- Grow – Pastoral leadership planning & training • Youth and Young adult Programs – Catholic schools – Education of our youth is key to the future • Diocesan programs – Things we can not do ourselves and need support – Tasks that take the work load off pastors- i. e. Hospital ministry • • • Facility upgrades & maintenance Support for Cemeteries Lay pension Plan 6
Opportunities for Cash • Successful execution of the Strategic plan – Getting more people in the pews • Electronic Giving • Increased offering programs • Planned giving & bequests • Sale of excess real estate - BIG OPPORTUNITY • Expense saving opportunities – More volunteers More part-time employees/staff – Re-define positons/roles 7
Key questions to ask • If there are 1000 Catholics living in our PCA and 400 are active, how do we bring the 600 back to church – What does a welcoming parish/PCA look like • What staff, programs, services might be shared? • Develop finance and supervision plans – One central accounting office that charges back – Looking at reallocation of funds to support weaker entity • How do we develop a deeper level of inter-parochial participation? 8
What long range assumptions should we use? • Salary increases of 2%/ yr. • Heath Insurance increases of 5%/ yr. • Lay pension plan needs to be funded or paid down – 50 -100% of all property sales into the Lay Plan • Hope Appeal continues in its current format • The Catholic School assessment will continue to decrease – 1 -3% per year – High School reorganization - increased community and alumni support • Elementary schools supported within the PCA – Sharing and cooperation for education our youth 9
What long range assumptions should we use? • Insurance – No increase in Auto, G/L , workers comp or property insurance • except if values increase or property sold • Clerical assessment and admin assessment will continue – May change in 2022 10
What are the risks • Reduced parish income from Mass schedule changes – – – Risk to the parish Redistribution of income within the PCA Redistribution of Income outside the PCA Risk to school within a PCA Risk to pay expenses • Reduced Diocesan Income – Impact on Hope Appeal & Diocesan Services – Risk to school assessment 11
Other thoughts • Pay attention to impact of changes made – Mass schedule changed – what happen? – New program– how successful • • • This will take time – patience is a virtue Goal - Greater availability of pastors time as spiritual leader Goal - Increase efficiencies within the PCA – Economies of scale – An opportunity to try different models of “servant leadership team” 12

What is the Diocese doing to help • Strategic Planning Committee made up of 8 pastors from across the Diocese that ensures Hope Appeal spending is supporting the needs of the parish and the community • Reducing the Catholic school assessment so each school is moving towards being self sufficient – Parishes with school need a more detailed plan • Programs to reduce the cost in the parishes – Centralization of payroll – 95% Completed – Diocesan health care cost increases significant below region 17
Life is about Choices • Make the hard decisions now and get ahead of the curve or wait until a negative happens and react – Be proactive vs reactive – It is always better to be ahead of the curve – “Just do it” • See the glass as half full or see it as half empty – Positive and optimistic with realism is critical • When you see a road block – resolve the issue – Do not let anything stop you from moving forward – No excuses 18
Sustainability/Mission • • Focus on the Mission/Goal- Vision Understand the current situation Evaluate Risks & Opportunities Develop a 5 year plan Develop a detailed first year budget Execute the plan; timeline and deadlines Keep what works; toss out was does not 19
Goal Open and welcoming Faith community serving the needs of all in the PCA with a team of lay leaders Collaborating with and supporting priests and deacons in their pastoral ministry 20
Reality • Change is very difficult- especially when it includes you – But it is reality- and we must deal with it • Positive / can do attitude is critical • Team work and communication is key – Stop all rumors – they will kill you – Only start the rumors you want out there 21
Communication to Parish • Develop a concrete ways to communicate to the parish – Realities of the situation – Provide transparency to financial reports and make easy to understand – Explain the current situation on sacraments within the parish on an annual basis – Discuss social media and getting the young back to church • Share what is going on in the PCA process – Communications on web site and in the bulletin • Hold Town Hall meetings 22
