DAY TWO SUSTAINABILITY AND AFFILIATED/NATIONAL INITIATIVES
Agenda Day 2, 11: 00 – 12: 30 …and vice versa! • Summarize day 1 • How can DARIAH contribute to sustain affiliated projects? – Use Cases: CENDARI+EHRI, NEDIMAH • How can DARIAH contribute to sustain national contributions? • Map affiliated projects to working groups?
Summary Day 1 • DARIAH should: – be an indication of quality when you apply for funding. – be an authority that coordinates response to European calls – define an acceptable level of operation / added value. – define consensus / policies for selection contributions that are worth sustaining.
Summary Day 1 • Sustainability should: – also address organizational-, intellectual- and xyz perspective (next to social, environmental and economical).
Summary Day 1 • Working groups present: Meta Registries (Maarten). Providing reusable component. NEMO (Panos, Lorna). Provide ontology. Visual Media and Interactivity (Lars). Provide best practices. AAI (Peter). Provide central infrastructure. Sustainability (Peter, Luca). Provide sustainability model, provide brokerage. – MESO (Emiliano). Delegate sustainability. – Preservation (Elisabeth). Provide policies. – Thesaurus Maintenance (Helen). Provide interoperability. – – –
Affiliated project overview • Projects: – EHRI 2, CENDARI, ARIADNE, PARTHENOS, HUMANITIES AT SCALE, NEDIMAH, IPERION CH, Europeana Cloud, DARIAH-RC, DASISH, Di. Xi. T • Use Case: – Nedimah – EHRI and CENDARI: a archive registry
Use Case: CENDARI+EHRI • CENDARI organized a sustainability workshop between CENDARI, DARIAH VCC heads and EHRI: – CENDARI runs another x months: How can DARIAH sustain the outcomes? – a. o. note-taking environment, data space. – EHRI is creating a similar ‘data space’. – Inventory of remote non-digital archives with WW 1, WW 2, holocaust and medieval resources.
Use Case: CENDARI+EHRI • VCC 3: We also need an overview of archives and were investigating something like RE 3 DATA! – Apply economy of scale to sustain technology. – Apply delegation to sustain contents. • VCC 3 meeting in March: – Create a business plan why EHRI, CENDARI, DARIAH (and re 3 data? ) should collaborate on ‘collection registry’ • Setup as a working group.
Sustain affiliated projects • What are the high level principles to ‘guide’ affiliated projects to contribute to the sustainability of DARIAH and vice versa?
National Contributions • What are the high level principles to ‘guide’ national contributors to contribute to the sustainability of DARIAH and vice versa?
What can we do tomorrow?
DAY THREE WAYS FORWARD
Agenda Day 3, 09: 00 – 10: 30 • Summarize day 1 & day 2 • How to coordinate current affiliated projects • How do we *not* stop here?
Summarize Day 1 & Day 2 • Day 1: – Need to define role of DARIAH wrt sustainability – Consensus on desired level of functionality to be sustained. • Day 2: – Need to define policy & procedures for engaging with affiliated projects.
Priorities • What is the bare minimum that we can provide to increase future sustainability? – Awareness with SMT / Bo. D. – A statement of the level of functionality / quality that DARIAH wants to keep up. – Procedures / principles to ensure engagement between affiliated projects.
What gets lost if we don’t act now • Now – 5 years? – Commitment from countries, communities and individuals.
How to coordinate existing aff. Projects • Selection: PARTHENOS, Ha. S, EHRI 2, CENDARI, NEDIMAH, IPERION
Priority Matrix
Outcomes of SUSTAINABILITY THEME
Outline What is sustainability How to achieve sustainability? Develop policies & procedures WG on Sustainability Use Cases / Showcases Ne. Di. MAH Methods Ontology CENDARI / EHRI data space
What is sustainability? • Sustainability has multiple dimensions – Social, economic, environmental – Technical, intellectual, organizational • Sustainability is bidirectional – DARIAH activities (affiliated / relevant / …) • Sustainability had multiple levels – Coordinate funding – Coordinate infrastructure • Sustainability requires choices – role and vision communities needs • Sustainability requires commitment
Working Group: Sustainability • Define Strategy / Priorities – Need to get ahead instead of behind. Where do we want to be in 5 years? – Develop policies & procedures – Influence req. for inkinds / req. for affiliated projects • Create information – Matrix aff. projects / WG’s / … – Matrix funding – Showcases: Nedimah, Cendari, EHRI • Facilitate commitment / authority – Give input to Bo. D / NCC • Permanent structure?
Sustaining Ne. MO: The Ne. Di. MAH Methods Ontology Ne. MO is the output of the DARIAH affiliated project Ne. Di. MAH. Ne. MO will be sustained via the DARIAH Working Group Di. PMO: Digital Methods and Practices Observatory, within VCC 2 1. Technical sustainability - will be assured by DARIAH-GR, which will maintain and manage the online platform for Ne. MO, as well the model itself (WG project 4: Ontology Infrastructure and Observatory Portal on Digital Practices & Methods) 2. Intellectual sustainability: building the “knowledge base”: content recording the use of digital methods in humanities research. This is currently based on case studies developed at a series of workshops, using the scholarly practice model. It can only be assured through a collective, community-wide initiative. (WG project 3: Methods Ontology Curation and Content Development) – Activities to be carried out through the Working Groups: Scoping the content, building the community of practice, gathering data to populate the ontology. – Deliverables: setting up the Editorial Board, content for knowledge base – Outcomes for DARIAH-EU: Activation of international collaboration. Input by the wider digital humanities community. Greater visibility of digital humanities methods. Increased impact of digital research across Europe.
Use Case: CENDARI+EHRI • CENDARI asks DARIAH: “How can you help to sustain our results? ” – CENDARI creates a ‘data space’. – EHRI creates a very similar data space – Inventory of remote non-digital archives with WW 1, WW 2, holocaust and medieval resources. – VCC 3 wants an overview of archives as well. • Shared solution? – Share infrastructure (economy of scale) – Distribute maintenance (delegation) • Setup a WG to facilitate this
