Sustainability Sustainability A sustainability designing and constructing buildings
Sustainability
Sustainability A sustainability – designing and constructing buildings to make as little an impact on the environment as possible. Sustainability has four key purposes: • • Reduce energy use Reduce carbon emissions Reduce pollution and wastage Conserve (save) finite resources – oil, coal and gas
Methods of sustainable construction In order to construct a sustainable building, sustainability must be part of its design. . To achieve sustainability, the following things can be done: • Re-use Brownfield sites instead of building on Greenfield sites - Brownfield sites are sites that have usually been built on before. Greenfield sites are untouched, natural green land • - Position a building so that is gets the maximum amount of natural light. This can reduce the amount of electricity the building uses.
Methods of sustainable construction • Reducing time and wastage when during construction – Reduce transport pollution by purchasing materials from local supplies – Ordering the right amount of materials – Use prefabricated parts / materials. Prefabricated is a term to describe parts of a building or materials that are made in a factory and brought to site for assembly only. • Recycle site waste – separate it into different skips and reuse what you can.
Methods of sustainable construction • Use recycled materials in the construction of the building - Recycled materials use less energy to be produced and thus have a lower embodied energy Embodied energy = the total amount of energy required to produce a material. • Use sustainable materials from renewable sources
Sustainable materials • • Using sustainable materials is an important part of construction today. They ensure that we do not waste our natural resources. Below is a list of sustainable materials along with their uses. Sustainable material Use Hemp can be used as insulation. Lime Can be used as a replacement to cement when making mortar for bricklaying. Can also be uses as a render. Cedar A type of wood used for exterior cladding. Softwoods Construct timber frame buildings. Softwood trees can be regrown quickly in a sustainable way. Straw bales can be used to build walls, even entire houses. Sheep’s wool This can be used as insulation. Aluminium Can be used instead of UPVC plastic to make guttering and down pipes.
Structurally Insulated Panels (SIPS) Insulated timber panels that are strong enough to take loads. They have a central layer of insulation, with a plywood face on either side. Advantages – • • Fast method of construction Provides a lighter frame which is thermally efficient Disadvantages Made from wood - fire resistance could be an issue
Structurally Insulated Panels (SIPS) Finishes can be applied directly to the panels. These include: • • Exterior brickwork Block work Rendered finishes Cladding
