Sustainability in Food
What is Sustainability? Sustainability is the ability to continue a defined behaviour indefinitely. Sustainability in food means that certain farming practices need t be changed in order to maintain the earths ability to produce viable food and drink products.
What is NOT Sustainable Farming Palm oil is a type of edible vegetable oil that is derived from the palm fruit, grown on the African oil palm tree. The industry is linked to major issues such as deforestation, habitat degradation, climate change, animal cruelty and indigenous rights abuses in the countries where it is produced, as the land forests must be cleared for the development of the oil palm plantations.
What is NOT Sustainable Farming This large-scale deforestation is pushing many species to extinction, and findings show that if nothing changes species like the orangutan could become extinct in the wild within the next 5 -10 years, and Sumatran tigers less than 3 years.
How can foods be grown Sustainably? Sustainable palm oil is an approach to oil palm agriculture that aims to produce palm oil without causing deforestation or harming people. Sustainable farms produce crops and raise animals without relying on toxic chemical pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, genetically modified seeds, or practices that degrade soil, water, or other natural resources
How to support Sustainability The consumer can support sustainable farming by buying organic fruit and vegetables and seasonal products from local farmers. Don’t buy overly processed foods and drinks. Check labels and barcodes for unsustainable food choices. Make informed decisions about the foods you buy.
