What is SUSTAINABILITY? • Definition: A truly sustainable food system is one which nurtures the people, the animals, the land, the community and the environment.
Why is it important? • Food impacts every component of our lives • Production, processing, packaging, and transportation is dependent on fossil fuels, chemical, fertilizers that harm our environment. • Sustainability is important for public and environmental health
What can you do to help? • Every person makes a difference • Each American uses 25 -26 acres of resources in their lifetime • Small changes make a difference
3 Spheres of Sustainability
Environmental • Protecting the natural world. • Preserving the capability of the environment to support human life • Pollution prevention (decreasing fossil fuels) • Use of natural resources (decreasing deforestation) • Managing the environment (preventing a decline is natural eco-systems) • Purchase local produce • Eat meat that is not mass produced (less hormones)
Economic • Identifying strategies to run a profitable business that will fun over a number of years. • Looking for long term processes that use little resources and produce profits for a company • Research and development
Social • To develop processes that sustain standards of living, education, community and equal opportunity. • Using energy efficient light bulbs • Grow community gardens • Sustain wildlife
