Sustainability Ecological Footprints SCI 10 CD 1 Assess
Sustainability & Ecological Footprints SCI 10 -CD 1 Assess the consequences of human actions on the local, regional, and global climate and the sustainability of ecosystems.
Sustainability Sustainability: Sustain means to make something last longer. Ability means to be able to do something. What is an Ecosystem? The living (plants and animals) and non-living (air, water, soil) components of a biological community and their interrelationships. So what does “sustainability of ecosystems” mean? The ability to help ecosystems last longer by not impacting the living and nonliving components and their interrelationships too much when we take what we need from the environment.
What is an Ecological Footprint? Ecological Footprint = an accounting tool that measures the environmental impact of human consumption. It is measured in global hectares. The tool accounts for a populations’ consumption of food, transportation, housing, goods and services and expresses the findings in terms of the land area needed to support that populations’ consumption demands. The Ecological Footprint seeks to determine the total land area required, regardless of where that land is located, to sustain a given population. Saskatoon’s Ecological Footprint is the sum environmental impact of all Saskatoon residents’ consumption no matter where in the world the environmental impact occurs. The estimated sustainable ecological footprint is 1. 7 hectares person.
What can we do to Reduce our Ecological Footprint? We can examine our food, transportation, housing and good and services and the various ways in which we can make them more sustainable. We will begin by looking at food consumption as an example.

ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT ASSIGNMENT: Find out what your ecological footprint is (impact of your lifestyle on your environment). Then create an action plan for how you will change your lifestyle. Document your changes over 15 days. Record analyze your action plan in a report or design a brochure.
