Formalizing SCSA • To apply for 501(c)(3) Non-Profit organization – WHY? – – To take SCSA to a new level To be recognized as a legitimate organization Longevity & Succession planning Handling $ (fundraising, grants, etc. ) • Impact on you? Very little. – Anticipate committee meetings to occur frequently/as needed – Social events to continue to bring general membership together frequently – Web site information and updates to keep everyone current • Membership Dues?
Formalizing SCSA • Positions: – – – Chair/President Chair-elect Secretary Treasurer Past Chair / President 4 VP’s (representing each stakeholder group) • • Education Industry Legislation Community/Family
Engineering Your Tomorrow • 28 year program developed by Du. Pont to introduce 68 th grade girls to science & engineering. • Full day of hand’s on activities using basic science & engineering principles. • Parents involved talking to education and career panels. • SCSA to collaborate with Girl Scouts America and Girls Inc to bring this program to Sussex County for first time ever in event history. • First planning call scheduled Tue 12/19 @3 p • Will need girls/parents, women scientists & engineers, volunteers • Targeting April 2018.
Social Committee • First Social a success! – November 14 th @ JD Shuckers – ~20 members participated – Feedback from members was very positive – suggestions for another. • Next steps for Socials – Quarterly – Ad Hoc – aligned with other events • Thank you to Secure. Net. MD for sponsoring!
Tour Committee Update • Co-Chairs: Rob Nicholson/Clint Perkinson • Assembled short and long list of local industry of technology leaders • Committee Meeting on 11/29/17 – Good feedback on first tour at the Delaware Robotic Discovery Lab on 11/16/17 • Covered various research projects – Next tour being scheduled for 1/29/18 or 2/1/18 at Trinity Logistics. – Tours and feedback seen as positive marketing as a thank you for the tour.
Tour Committee Update • Committee Meeting 11/29/17 (Cont) – Delaware State Optical Science Center for Applied Research (OSCAR) may be a good tour option. Sandra Williams investigating. – Rob Nicholson covered Sea Perch event • Need 12 teams to receive a robot building kit. Free • Good for teachers to engage students • Middle & high school aged kids. (Can be from non-K 12 organizations. ie YMCA, libraries, etc. ) • Need a sponsor for lunch. Estimate to be $2, 500 • Need volunteers to assist – Meeting frequency – last Wednesday of month
Education Committee • I attended the Delaware Mathematics Coalition Annual Mathematics Leadership Symposium 12/7; Event led by our member Jamila Riser. • I attended a DOE Board Meeting on 12/14 to advocate Computer Science teaching standards for K-12. • Looking for a Co-CHAIR – Preferably someone in Education.
Mentorship Committee • TEDx Talk – Cyber. Streets founder and SCSA member Rob Bentley presented on December 14 th at Route 9 Innovation Center in Wilmington and established several new outreach relationships to include professional mentors. – Working with several other new organizations to establish STEMtech programs pilots in all three counties. – Partnering with several new organizations that would like to provide tours, mentors, and potential entry level paying positions for our inner city youth.
Mentorship Committee • In process of working with vendor partners on the deployable MAKE-STEM kits for community centers. One of the centers Cyber Streets working with purchased kits and is currently piloting them with their kids.
