SURVIVING IN ALERT Being dropped off in Alert by a helicopter with only things that can fit into a car trunk sized space. This is a list of things to bring to stay warm so that you don’t freeze to death (thanks Miss Taves).

BIG BUDDY PORTABLE HEATER • I chose this heater because it is big, but portable so it can fit into the trunk of a car. A heater is a good thing to have in Alert in the winter when you are camping because while it is in the tent both convection and radiation are working. Convection is causing the heat to go around in a cycle. Radiation is causing the heat to move toward you in radiation waves. • It is also useful for warming blankets and clothes so that they are warm. Placing a blanket or clothes next to this will radiate heat from the heater to the blanket or clothes. So, the next time I them they will conduct heat from them to me.

PATAGONIA INSULATED SNOWBELLE PANT • I chose these pants because they have thermogreen insulation, they also have H 2 No Performance Standard waterproofing so if you are in the snow your legs will not be wet when you go into your tent with your heater. It would be better if they came in black because black is the colour that most attracts heat, but they don’t. • Also when you wear these pants there will be convection happening inside, the heat from the heater will radiate to your pants so then they will insulate the heat. They will also conduct heat from the inside of the pants to your legs so then your legs will be warm

THERAPEDIC® ULTIMATE COMFORT PLUSH HEATED BLANKET • I chose this blanket because it is an electric blanket so it has a remote with a button that turns the blanket on so that it is warm. The wires inside of the blanket are heated to conduct heat to you when you use the blanket. It’s main purpose is not to insulate, however, it will insulate fairly well if you wrap it around yourself. • I also chose this blanket because it has an automatic shut off so that when you are not using it (if you are outside doing something that can’t be done in the tent) you will not have to remember to turn it off. Also, it will not waste too much power if you do forget to turn it off.

CANADA GOOSE SNOW MANTRA PARKA • I chose the Snow Mantra Parka because the fur and the layers inside of it help keep insulated. Convection will keep the heat trapped and moving around inside of your coat. • I chose the colour black because black is the colour that best attracts heat. So, I would be warmer in black and colder in white. This is because, the colour black absorbs more colours and white simply reflects colour. So, black would absorbs more energy than white, which makes it hotter.

BAFFIN 3 PIN GUIDE PRO BOOTS • I chose this pair of boots because it has a removable, multi-layer inner boot lining system featuring gel-based thermal insulation. It also has lace fastening to trap all of the heat inside of the boot. When the heat is trapped inside of the boot it will move around in a cycle, convection. • I also wanted to use these boots because they are waterproof so that no water will get into your boot when snow melts. Having a waterproof boot is important because when an insulator gets wet it is much harder for it to insulate.
