Surrealism:
What is Surrealism Art? • Art that explores the inner mind and your dreams • Art that very imaginative • Art that is kinda weird!! Let’s look at some examples …
As you can see … Surrealism can be many different things
Surrealism can be … • A piece of art that shocks you because it looks so different than what we are used to • Everyday objects like people can have a strange size, color, or shape • Anything your imagination can dream up • Very detailed and very colorful
How did Surrealism happen? • Artists were responding to the horror of World War I • They were tired of all the fighting and killing • Surrealist artists thought that if we used our imagination more we could change our society for the better. • Surrealism started as a movement in the early 1920 s. • Most artists no longer practice surrealism, but its impact on all art is still clear today
If you want to be a surrealist artist … • Really explore and think about your dreams. Even the weird dreams that don’t make any sense. Then turn those dreams into art • Be different. Try writing a story where you write the first words that come into your head even if they don’t make sense • Try drawing or painting without looking at your paper. Whatever your picture looks like it will be creative, right? • See the world in a new way … mix everything up!
Salvador Dali A Spanish surrealist artist
Look at these Dali paintings
What did you think? Now look at this one …
• What do you see here? • What would it be like in this place? • Notice the clocks. What is unusual about them? • Why are the clocks soft? How would you explain this mystery? • Take a look at the large object on the ground. What could it be? • Find a tree. What is strange about it? • What would the weather be like in this place? • What about this place is like a dream? • Would you want to be in this picture? Why or Why not? The Persistence of Memory
