What was just before Surrealism, , , DADAism Revolted by the butchery of the 1914 World War, we in Zurich devoted ourselves to the arts. Surrealism and Automatism is the same as free association, the method used by the founder of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud to explore the unconscious mind of his patients. The earliest examples of automatism are the automatic writings of Breton and others, produced by simply writing down as rapidly as possible whatever springs to mind. Surrealist collage, invented by Max Ernst, was the first form of visual automatism, in which he put together images clipped from magazines, product catalogues, book illustrations, advertisements and other sources to create a strange new reality.
Surrealism and Collage Max Ernst created collages by cutting images out of books and putting them onto strange backgrounds. Ernst liked to shock and liked to mock social conventions. Ernst was a soldier and came out traumatized anti western culture. Most of his work was trying to say that he thought that the modern world was irrational.
Surrealism and Assemblage Many Surrealist artists, especially in the 1930 s, began arranging objects in combinations that challenged reason and summoned subconscious and poetic associations. The most easily obtained materials were found objects, or items cheaply purchased at flea markets. The mundane, mostly mass-produced objects found new meanings when arranged in different and strange ways. Surrealist leader Andre’Breton believed that this new form of sculpture, called assemblage , had the power to tap into the subconscious mind. As Breton proclaimed: “Humour is the process that allows one to brush reality aside when it gets too distressing. ” How do you think this quote relates to what was happening at the time? How does this assemblage sculpture make you feel?

Using the Surrealist technique of unexpected juxtaposition, Joseph Cornell's best-known works are glass-fronted boxes into which he placed and arranged Victorian found objects, old photographs, pound shop toys, and other found items. Generally referred to as "shadow boxes, " the resulting pieces are dream-like miniature worlds. Cornell often used the shadow boxes to address themes of interest such as childhood, space, and birds, and they represented an escape of sorts for their creator, who was famously reclusive. (He stayed in a lot to look after his mother and disabled brother). He used these boxes as ways to escape into other worlds as he did not travel himself. Among the earliest examples of assemblage, the shadow boxes also helped kick start other artists to work in this way. Tilly Losch 1935 (inspired by a theatre actress)
He preferred the ticket to the trip, the postcard to the place… Cornell’s boxes look like dreams to us, but the mind that made them was always wide awake. The New Yorker Cornell’s headmaster took notice of Cornell's extreme shyness and insecurity and expressed his concern to Cornell's mother. Cornell seemed to be overly fearful of many things, and he once confided in his sister Elizabeth how frightened he was at the concept of infinity. TASK: You are going to be creating an assemblage box. The theme is fear. To begin you need to start with a brainstorm. We will not create a normal brainstorm but a visual brainstorm using the collage techniques of the Dadaists. Use the magazines provided to create a collage.
Consider the word FEAR. Do not be too conscious about what you are sticking together. Think about the Automatism. You may draw some elements too if you like. Randy Mora (b. 1986 - Bogotá, Colombia). Freelance illustrator. Currently living in Bogotá, Colombia.
John Latham Belief System 1959 There are many contemporary assemblage artists who incorporate found objects into their work. Would these artists have been so inspired without the Surrealists taking those risks?
