Surgical-Assisting Terminology • Sterilization – process of killing all present microorganisms • Disinfectant – chemical that kills most infectious material on surfaces • Antiseptic – chemical that inhibits infection or infectious material during surgery • Sepsis – presence of infection or infectious material; a “septic environment” • Asepsis – absence of infection or infectious material; a “sterile or aseptic environment”

What does a Surgical-Assistant do? • prepare the operating room and related equipment • provide care for animals undergoing surgery • keep veterinarian/surgeon aware of patient and any problems that arise during surgical procedure • maintain asepsis of the operating room • monitor recovery of the patient

1. Equipment and Tool Prep • Autoclave Machine – Used to sterilize tools and surgery packs through the use of steam, heat and pressure

1. Equipment and Tool Prep • What is a surgery pack? – the tools required for a particular operation that are wrapped and sterilized.

Equipment and Tool Prep • What to include in a surgery pack? – All surgical instruments and other sterile material that may be needed during the surgery. – This may include suture material and/or needles, gauze or cotton-tipped swabs and draping material. – The instruments and material needed in each pack will vary because of the different species’ sizes and surgical needs.

2. Surgery Room Prep • Dust and disinfect all surfaces. • Make sure all necessary surgical equipment is readily accessible. • Surgery packs should be in place, but left unopened prior to scrubbing. Scrubbing: to wash the hands and forearms thoroughly before engaging in surgery.
