Surah As-Saff The Row – Madani Surah 14 verses

Reason for revelation • A group of companions were discussing that If we knew the dearest of actions in the sight of Allah, we would give up our lives and wealth for it • They wanted to go ask the Prophet Muhammad (May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) but no one dared to • Prophet Muhammad (May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) sent a man to call each one of the companions by name • When they all arrived the Prophet Muhammad (May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) recited the entire Surah Saff to them which had just been revealed

They did not know what the action was • How can they commit to it? • How do they know when the situation arises they will have the ability to do it? • Should not commit to something you do not know off? • How can you think you will do it without sayinf inshallah • Even worse you should not say you will do something without having the intention to do so ‘(major sin) – not referring to the companions

Best deed = jihaad • Followed by a description of those who fought on behalf of Prophet Musa and Esa (as)

Verse 11 – 13 Fighting in the path of Allah with your wealth and riches is a trade When you work hard you get profit Profit = Jannah, pleasure of Allah, blessing Blessing in this world = success in battle Eg. Battle of khaibar and conquest of Makkah

Verse 14 • After Esa (as) went up to the heavens, there became three groups He himself was God and went up to the heavens He was God’s son and God took him up to save him from the enemies He was God’s servant and Allah took him up to save him from the enemies and to raise his status
