Surah Al – Jumu’ah Madani Surah – 11 VERSES

Verse 2 – Ummiyeen (unlettered people) › The Arabs were known by this title because majority of them knew did not know how to read and write › The Job of a Prophet is based on education and knowledge › How could someone unlettered do that job? › How could and unlettered nation accept such a message? › Miracle of Allah

To make them pure (inner and outer) Taleem To recite the Quran to them Tazkiyah Tilawah Three jobs of a Prophet To teach them the book and wisdom

Verse 3 – who are the Akhireen (the others) › Abu Hurairah (ra) narrates that were sitting in the company of Prophet Muhammad (May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) when Surah Jumuah was revealed. › He recited it until he got to verse 3 › The companions asked who are these ‘others’ › Prophet Muhammad (May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent › They asked him a second time and they remained silent › They asked him the third time and the put his hand on the back of Salman Al – Farsi and said: “If faith were on stars, even some men or a man from these people would attain it’ › Others = all non arabs who embrace Islam

Verse 5 – the example of the one who was supposed to act on the Torah, and they did not, is like a donkey that carries a load of books › It was told to them in the Torah that Prophet Muhammad (May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) would come and even how to recognise him › But their possessions and positions blinded them › Similar to a donkey, it is not aware of the content of the books it is carrying nor does it benefit by carrying the books. › Similar to the Jews, who carry around the Torah but do not benefit by its guidance.

This verse also applies to people who do not practise what they preach themselves

Verse 9 -11 – Jumu’ah day › Why is it called Jumuah? › Day of congregation for the muslims › Other nations did not have this day › Jews = Saturday › Christian = Sunday › Known as Yaumul Arubah in the days of ignorance › Quraysh used to gather on this day and Prophets forefather Kaab bin Lua’yy used to deliver a sermon 560 years before the Prophet.

How many Adhaans of Jumuah? › Time of the Prophet Muhammad (May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) = one adhaan › Caliph of Uthman (ra) = Two Adhans › What is the difference in Jumah Salah and Dhur Salah?

Verse 10 - After Jumah Salah › Trading after Jummah › There is barakah in it

Verse 11 › Prophet Muhammad (May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the Friday sermon after the Jummah Salah › Suddenly a trading caravan arrived in Medina, drums were beaten to announce the arrival › This Caravan normally comes with all the essentials, especially essential food items. Whenever it would arrive, people would run towards it. Hasan Al Basari says this happened at a time when things were scarce. › Many companions went to the market place › A few had remained behind – about 12 › Prophet Muhammad (May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If they all had gone, the entire valley of Medina would have been filled with the fire of punishment”

Why did the companions leave? 1. 2. 3. 4. Fard prayer had finished They did not know the status of the Friday Sermon There was a shortage of essential items and food Other buyers would get there first This verse 11 was then revealed a s a reminder to them For this reason, the Prophet Muhammad (May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) changed the order and out the sermon first and then the prayer!
