SUPER Mo. RRI project principles SUPER Mo. RRI is a research project that should make scientific, technical, societal and policy contributions • First principle is an approach to monitoring that supports responsible research and innovation • Second principle is a responsible approach to data and the construction, design and use of quantification tools including indicators • Third principle is to provide users with data and information that is relevant to their monitoring purposes

Strategic plan • Outcome of a process of critical reflection on the antecedents and aspirations of SUPER Mo. RRI • Review of the Mo. RRI indicators of RRI • Summarises our engagement to date with the conceptual heterogeneity around responsibility in research and innovation • Four narratives of the policy problem that RRI addresses • A summary theoretical framing for understanding and investigating transformation of R&I toward greater responsibility • Identifies sources for existing metrics and indicators, both those in the wild and those that remain confined to the laboratory

Our monitoring approach A framework within which we deliver an array of elements: • that support R&I actors engaged with various problems and challenges • according to their key monitoring purpose(s) and needs • learning about transformation processes • facilitating appropriate comparisons • informing policy/practice design and response • incorporating existing and newly created elements • including consolidated, exploratory and even experimental information streams and tools (with appropriate handle with care warnings!)

Responsible quantification • SUPER Mo. RRI will use a range of quantification tools including geospatial maps, data visualisations and indicators • Quantifications will be accompanied by tools to support users in making responsible interpretations • Interpretive model: describing what the quantification has been designed to indicate • Complementary information: providing relevant contextual details relevant to interpretation • Guidance supporting users to make appropriate comparisons within limits of interpretive confidence that we call credible contextualisation

Metrics and indicators • Mo. RRI indicators of RRI key areas reviewed in terms

Metrics and indicators • Mo. RRI indicators of RRI key areas reviewed in terms of four criteria critical to the development of the monitoring framework • relevance, validity, feasibility, usefulness. • Continuing Mo. RRI indicators will be reinforced by supporting tools • Scope to draw on, or modify, other indicators already existing in the wild or in the lab • Construction of new indicators addressing research questions • based on primary data generated by SUPER Mo. RRI • involving a co-creation phase with potential key users regarding metric design, interpretive framing, presentation

Implementation Plan • Continuity from Mo. RRI – but incremental reworking towards improved indicators

Implementation Plan • Continuity from Mo. RRI – but incremental reworking towards improved indicators and methodologies • Prioritising high quality data; protocols, pilots, stakeholder cocreation • Combination of quantitative and qualitative data, secondary and primary data, across macro-, meso-, micro levels • A collection of interrelated data vehicles, serving monitoring purposes but also case research portfolio • Balancing data security (wrt personal data) and FAIR data sharing
