Showing Concern and Contentment Philippians 4: 10 – 23
I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. 11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength. 14 Yet it was good of you to share in my troubles. 15 Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only; 16 for even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid more than once when I was in need. 10
Not that I desire your gifts; what I desire is that more be credited to your account. 18 I have received full payment and have more than enough. I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God. 19 And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. 20 To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen. 21 Greet all God's people in Christ Jesus. The brothers and sisters who are with me send greetings. 22 All God's people here send you greetings, especially those who belong to Caesar's household. 23 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. RENEWED BY CARE AND CONCERN I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. • anathalo , to thrive, flourish. To thrive or flourish again as trees or plants which, though they seem dead in the winter, revive and flourish again in spring. In Phil. 4: 10, the verb is used trans. : "You have caused your care of me to thrive [or flourish] again” • Paul was locked away in prison and Epaphroditus steps in with love, concern and gifts from the church in Philippi. • 10
PAUL WAS GRATEFUL FOR THE LOVE AND SUPPORT not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only; (Philippians 4: 15) 16 you sent me aid more than once when I was in need. IT WAS NOT JUST ABOUT THE MONEY • This is not about fund raising or writing for donations. This is about Godly friendship, partnership in the work of the Gospel and faith in Jesus Christ who is able to sustain them. • Paul is carefully saying thank you in a way that will convey his deep gratitude and at the same time not take advantage of or make lesser the friendship by implying in anyway that they should give more, or the money matters more than they do to him. • 1 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. (Philippians 4: 11)
SHOWING CONCERN “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. ’ 37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 34
SHOWING CONCERN When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you? ’ 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. ’ (Matthew 25: 34 – 40) 38
GODLY CONTENTMENT I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. CONTENTMENT “Content" (autarke-s) is widely used by Greek philosophers, particularly the Stoics, to denote a self-sufficiency, an inner freedom not dependent on the ups and downs of life. Paul’s contentment is found in Jesus Christ.

GENEROSITY IS NOT A MATTER OF HOW MUCH YOU GIVE • 1 As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. 2 He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. 3 “Truly I tell you, ” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. 4 All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on. ” (Luke 21: 1 – 4) • Her generosity was not constrained by what she had and the circumstances she was facing.
I CAN DO ALL THING/ THIS I can do all this through Christ who strengthens me. (Philippians 4: 13) GOD’S PLAN
PHILIPPI A CHURCH THAT GIVES SACRIFICIALLY And now, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian (Philippi, Thessalonica and Berea) churches. 2 In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. 3 For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, 4 they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord's people. 5 And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us. 1
PHILIPPI A CHURCH THAT GIVES SACRIFICIALLY So we urged Titus, just as he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion this act of grace on your part. 7 But since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you—see that you also excel in this grace of giving. CONTENTMENT AND SERVICE • Contentment is the product of joy, peace and humility found in Jesus Christ. • Such contentment makes us thoughtful of the suffering of others. We long to share what we have received from Jesus to bring comfort and encouragement to others. • Christ-like humility moves us to show care and concern, placing the needs of others above ourselves knowing well that God will care for us.
THE SUPPORT THAT COMES FROM CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP • Shared in my distress, Visited me in prison, Cared for me. • 1 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. (Philippians 2: 1 – 4)
THE SUFFICIENCY OF CHRIST • Any encouragement in being united in Christ. • Filled with the Spirit. • I can do all this through Christ who strengthens me.
