What is the Summit Series? • The Summit Series was a series of eight games of hockey between Canada and the Soviet Union held September 1972.

• In August, Canadian scouts John Mc. Lellan and Bob Davidson spent four days in Russia scouting out the compititon. The two men reported that the team consisted of "outclassed amateurs" and believed that the USSR goalie Vladislav Tretiak was the "week link" • Before there first game Canadian goalie Jacques Plante apparently felt sorry for the USSR goalie so he went to the Soviet dressing room to talk to him about the shooting tendencies of the Canadian players. • Many people thought that Canada would easily defeat the USSR, but that thought disappeared quickly when Canada lost there first game followed by two ties and another win for Soviet.

• After the first four games of the series both teams took a two week break. On September 12, the Canadian team flew to Stockholm, Sweden to play two exhibition games against the Sweden national team to get used to the wider European ice surface. • Canada faced a few different problems as the got to Moscow. Three of there teammates who saw little to no ice time left Moscow and returned to Canada. • In addition, the hotel they stayed in, in Russia was not what the Canadians were used to. Players phones would ring in the middle of the night, and food they would buy would disappear. • They then went on to play there last four games of there series. Canada winning all four.

The Final Game • In order to win the series Canada had to win game eight. If the game ended in a tie USSR would claim the win because they had more goals overall. With the game tied 5 -5 Canada's left winger, Paul Henderson scored with 34 seconds left.
