Our Mission: The Summit Music Parents’ Association (SMPA), was created to provide encouragement and support for the activities of the Summit High School Music Department programs including Band, Orchestra, Choir, and Band Front. In the middle school, SMPA supports move up days and the All City Music. Summit Music Parents Association Established in 1981 as a non-profit 501(c)3. Scholarship Funding: SMPA awards the following scholarships each year: Ø$5, 000 Senior scholarships Ø$1, 000 Carol Hassert scholarship Ø$1, 000 Merola and Lennox Underground Scholarships Ø$13, 000 Program Support Ø$14, 000 Trip Support Fundraising: SMPA membership opens in September with the school year. Our fundraising efforts begin in the fall with the running the concession stand during home football games and Pledge Day. During the 2016 – 2018 program years, SMPA raised over $98, 000 dollars including $32, 628 on Pledge day 2017! BOE Budget Support: currently the district budget funds the spaces for the students to perform (e. g. , auditorium and classrooms) and the teacher, supervisor salaries and stipends. 3 Visit www. smpasummit. org for more information

Program: Summit High School Concert/Wind Ensemble Directors: Mr. Steve Rapp and Mr. Alex Bocchino Performances: Holiday concert in mid December, CJMEA Band Festival mid March, Summit District Arts Festival end of March, Spring concert end of May, High School Graduation late June (Wind Ensemble Only). Wind ensemble is often called up for extra performances, such as performing at MSU in February of 2018. Student Participation: All Freshman who sign up for band are placed concert band. After freshman year Students do NOT need to reaudition for concert band. Wind ensemble is open to Sophomores-Seniors by audition only. Wind Ensemble Audition Process: In early December the music will be made available for the students to prepare for wind ensemble auditions. Auditions are held in late January early February Rehearsals: Both ensembles are scheduled class and as such meet during the school day. Additionally, students are provided with pull-out lessons during the year. Additional Auditions (not mandatory): Region Try-outs early December, All State Try-outs mid January Parent Involvement: We need many volunteers to help out for many of our events. Such as the band festival, pledge day, Arts fest, etc. These volunteers are usually coordinated through SMPA Communications: Communications are done through email to students and parents. Program: Summit High School Marching Band Coach/Director: Mr. Steve Rapp Assistants: Mr. Alex Bocchino, Ms. Rebecca Hoffler and Michael Gleason, Ms. Bernadette Burke and Ms Jenn Testa. Performance: The band performs a sneak preview of half-time show for parents on the last day of band camp. We march our halftime show at all home football games including our annual performance under the lights at Friday night lights. Additionally if the team does well we have an opportunity to perform on the field at Met. Life Stadium. Our volunteer Pep band performs at away football games. The band also marches at Summit’s annual Memorial Day Parade. Student Participation: All students who sign up for band are in marching band. There is a summer camp at the end of August to learn the music and half time routine. All home games, playoff games, and parades are mandatory. All students are required to perform at least one away game. We do have some exceptions to the rule and we will work with students to make participation work. Audition Process: There are no auditions for marching band. Rehearsals: After our band camp in August, the band practice on Thursday evenings from 5: 30 -7: 30 and Saturday mornings prior to home games and some away games. Parent Involvement: We need tons of help. There are opportunities to help with moving percussion equipment, uniforms, band camp refreshments, halftime refreshments, plumes, etc. Communications: Communications are done through email to students and parents. Student Participation: Open to Students in SHS Music Program Audition Process: Students audition late September Rehearsals: Rehearsals are mandatory and will be held on Mondays and Thursdays from 7: 00 to 8: 30 p. m. Sectionals are on Tuesday afternoons from 3 -4 p. m. Communications: Communications are done through email to students and parents. Performance: Holiday concert in mid December, Summit District Arts Festival in mid March, Choral Festival at SHS in April, Spring concert end of May Student Participation: Students must register for the course in order to participate. Audition Process: Concert Choir is an un-auditioned ensemble. Rehearsals: Rehearsals take place during the school day in class. Parent Involvement: There is minimal parent involvement. Parents attend concerts presented at the HS. Communications: Communications are done directly from Mr. King to the students via Google classroom or email and occasionally to the parents. Students are required to sign-up for an audition time. Rehearsals: Typically Tuesday evenings from 6 -8 pm. There may be some additional rehearsals during the school day prior to an event. Parent Involvement: There is minimal parent involvement. Parents attend concerts presented at the HS. Communications: Communications are done directly from Mr. King to the students via Google classroom or email and occasionally to the parents. There might be some information from SMPA communicated via email from the orchestra liaison. Program: Summit High School Treble Chorus Directors: Mr. Dan King Selection of Production: Typically selected by the director with occasional input from the students. Performances: Holiday concert in mid December, Summit District Arts Festival in mid March, Choral Festival at SHS in April, Spring concert end of May Student Participation: Students must register for the course in order to participate. This ensemble is for first-year treble singers at the high school, typically freshman girls but sophomore-senior girls who are taking chorus for the first time take this class as well. Audition Process: Concert Choir is an un-auditioned ensemble. Rehearsals: Rehearsals take place during the school day in class. Parent Involvement: There is minimal parent involvement. Parents attend concerts presented at the HS. Communications: Communications are done directly from Mr. King to the students via Google classroom or email and occasionally to the parents. Program: Summit High School Orchestra Director: Mrs. Barbara Vierschilling Assistants: Orchestra Council Selection of Production: Holiday music, all genres of music from Baroque to Modern and Patriotic music. Students are active participants in the selection process. Performances: Holiday concert mid December, Rotary Luncheon in December, Summit District Arts Festival mid March, Spring concert end of May Student Participation: Students select orchestra as an elective to fulfill a graduation requirement. Students may choose to select orchestra for 1 -4 years. Students must have either played in middle school orchestra or like group. Audition Process: There is no audition for this group. Must have played in a Middle School or private study for high school readiness. Rehearsals: During class period Parent Involvement: As this is a class, there is minimal parent involvement. Parents attend 2 concerts per year presented at the HS. We have orchestra representatives on SMPA. Communications: Communications are done directly from Mrs. Viershilling to the students via Google classroom or email and occasionally to the parents. There might be some information from SMPA communicated via email from the orchestra liaison. Program: Summit High School Chamber Orchestra Director: Mrs. Barbara Vierschilling Selection of Production: Music selections range from all genres at the level of professional musicians. Performances: Holiday concert mid December, Summit District Arts Festival mid March, Spring concert end of May, Rutgers Orchestra Festival, the Rotary, the tour of elementary schools. In addition, master classes, board of education meetings, and philanthropic events throughout the area. Audition Process: Students audition on September 11 th this year. Rehearsals: Chamber rehearsals are all year long beginning on September 12 th followed by a Chamber Kick Off Party. Parent Involvement: We need drivers for the Rutgers Festival. The date is Nov. 3 rd this year. Program: Summit High School Orchestra String Quartet/Quintet/Sextet Director: Mrs. Barbara Vierschilling Selection of Production: Music selections range from all genres at the level of professional musicians. Performances: Holiday concert mid December, Summit District Arts Festival mid March, Spring concert end of May. Additional performances at the Rotary, board of education meetings, and philanthropic events throughout the area. Audition Process: An audition group is selected in June of each school year. We also have performances during school hours as well. Audition Process: There is no audition for band. Rehearsals: Are during school hours. Students receive a schedule. Program: LCJ Summit Middle School Chorus Director: Mary-Lynn Rhodes Assistants: Accompanists (Professional &/or Student)

Program: LCJ Summit Middle School Chorus Director: Mary-Lynn Rhodes Assistants: Accompanists (Professional &/or Student) Performances: Holiday concerts (mid December) for 7 th and 8 th grades, Winter concert (February) for 6 th grade, Summit District Arts Festival (mid March) for 8 th grade, Spring concerts (May) for each grade level. Student Participation: All students are welcome to join chorus. It is an elective that meets 1 -2 times per week during a student’s Phys. Ed. class. If a student plays an instrument they can still participate in chorus through the shared chorus program which meets during a lesson period once every other week (roughly 5 -7 times per concert performance). Audition Process: There is no audition for chorus. Rehearsals: Are during school hours. Students receive a schedule. The schedule is also posted in the daily announcements and on the chorus Google classroom. Parent Involvement: Concert attendance twice a year. Communications: Communication is through email and assignments are posted on the teacher’s websites. Program: LCJ Summit Middle School Bel Canto Director: Mary-Lynn Rhodes Assistants: Various accompanist (professional &/or student) Performances: Veteran’s Day Assembly (During the school day), Winter Concert (February), Elementary Tour (During the school day in February or March), Night for the Soul (February), Hoops for Humanity (February), SPARC Pancake Breakfast (March), Summit District Arts Festival (March), Summit Choral Festival (April), Spring Concert (May), High Note Festival/Dorney Park (May) & the Memorial Day Assembly (During the school Day). Student Participation: Roughly 35 students are selected through an audition process to commit to a performance packed academic year. Audition Process: Students audition in September. Mrs. Rhodes provides two audition workshops for students to learn the audition material. Rehearsal tracks are posted on a Google classroom for the students to practice with prior to the audition. Current members re-audition each year. Results are posted at the end of the month. Rehearsals: Every Wednesday from 4: 00 -5: 30 pm in the Orchestra room. Occasional dress rehearsals during school hours for our big performances. Parent Involvement: Parents support this group by ensuring their student attends all rehearsals, attending performances, and with the occasional food donation for our High Note Festival & end of year party. Communications: Communication is through frequent emails and performance dates are posted on the teacher’s websites.
